Summary:
As part of a six book series, in Point Blank, Alex Rider takes the reader through an adventure that seems unlikely in our 3-D world. In Point Blank, the second book of the series, the young fourteen-year old Alex Rider who was unknowingly trained by his uncle Ian Rider before he was killed is contacted by the MI6 once again to help with an investigation they are looking into. He soon takes on the identity of Alex Friend and is sent off to France to attend his new school Point Blanc. While at the academy, Alex investigates why two incredibly rich men that both had kids that attended the school had been killed. As the story continues on, Alex runs into many problems with Dr. Grief and Mrs. Stellenbosch who runs the school Alex is now attending. There are places in the school that are off limits to the students and other things that are skeptical to Alex. As Alex investigates into this mystery, he discovers many things that lead him to believe Dr. Grief has a plan to take over the world by killing the richest and most powerful men in the world through the use of their children. As the end of the book comes, Dr. Grief tells Alex of his plan because the doctor now has intends to kill him. He is told that fourteen years ago Dr. Grief made sixteen clones of himself. His plans were to take the sixteen kids that attend the school and by using plastic surgery, he would make the clones look exactly like each kid. These clones would live on the off limits third floor which was found to be an exact replica of the first floor and do everything exactly as the people they are supposed to be. As the book comes to a close, Alex makes an action packed getaway and the MI6 busts Dr. Grief and Mrs. Stellenbosch. Alex Rider is able to get through this adventure with the use of his gadgets provided by MI6 and the help of his knowledge learned from his uncle.
Review:
I thought the book Point Blank was very good and had a very interesting plot. The book kept the reader on edge multiple times throughout the book and I was always wondering what was happening next. Some spots in the book were a little confusing but by reading over those areas, the main idea of the book was not ruined. I liked the idea of the using a kid instead of an adult to be a secret agent this makes me wonder if this could really be possible. Can a kid really be a top secret spy? I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action books and who is interested in mysteries, I also recommend anyone interested to read the first book; Stormbreaker to understand the background of what is happening.
Quote:
“Who do you think? I cloned myself!” Dr. Grief grabbed hold of the arms of his chair, a king on a throne of his own imagination. “Twenty years ago I began my work,” he explained. “I told you – I was minister of science.” I chose this quote because it is a point in the book where everything starts to come together for both the reader and Alex Rider. At this point we know that Dr. Grief had cloned himself to plan something against the world and we can now begin to speculate what will happen from here. I personally thought this was a good quote because around this point in the story I started to concentrate more closely and understand more easily what was happening.
