The DaVinci Code (Audra Yelin)

The DaVinci Code, Dan Brown, Anchor Books, 454 pages I found the book at Barnes and Nobles Summary: Symbologist teacher, Robert Langdon, and Cryptologist, Sophie Neveu are awakened in the dead of night by a phone call. Each of them arrives at the Louvre Museum to discover the death of Jacques Sauniere, an influential man to the both of them. Sauniere’s body lie on the ground scrawled in symbol’s that only Sophie and Robert can discover the meaning of. Throughout the novel Langdon and Neveu find themselves in a chaotic mess trying to figure out the meaning behind Sauniere’s last words. They go through obstacles of avoiding the police, as well as death. Decoding every last symbol and anagram, Sophie and Robert figure out a secret so sacred to society…it could change history forever. The audience is directed towards anyone who enjoys an intriguing novel filled with codes, mystery, and jaw dropping twists.

Brown’s writing style is absorbing and descriptive. It is easy for the reader to understand with all of the details, and it leaves your heart racing.

“O, Draconian Devil! Oh, Lame Saint! Was a perfect anagram of…Leonardo da Vinci! The Mona Lisa!” (98)

Passages:1) “ Yes, PHI,” Langdon replied. “One-point-six-one-eight. Want another example? Measure the distance from your shoulder to your fingertips, then divide the distance from your elbow to your fingertips. PHI again. Another? Hip to floor divided by knee to floor. PHI again. Finger joints. Toes. Spinal divisions. PHI. PHI. PHI. My friends, each of you is a walking tribute to the Divine Proportion.” (95)

This passage struck me because before I had never heard of the number 1.618, or the Fibonacci sequence. I thought it was incredible that not only could it be related to art but to everything else, including the human body.

2) “The bible is a product of man, my dear. Not of God. The bible did not fall magically from the clouds. Man created it as a historical record of tumultuous times, and it has evolved through countless translations, additions, and revisions. History has never had a definitive version of the book.” (231)

I found this passage so Intriguing because I have somewhat always believed that the bible was just a story made up by people who were bored, it just happened to become a best seller.

3) “Langdon hesitated a moment and then began nodding. ‘Brilliant.’ Vinegar and papyrus, Sophie thought. If someone attempted to force open the cryptex, the glass vial would break, and the vinegar would quickly dissolve the papyrus. By the time anyone extracted the secret message, it would be a glob of meaningless pulp.” (201)

This passage struck me because DaVinci was brilliant! He mostly gets credit for his art work however, DaVinci created so many inventions and used so much zymology that it was genius!

I really enjoyed this novel, it was amazing! I related to a lot of the meanings behind certain clues and messages. I think that each clue they unraveled also held a deeper meaning. I also related to all of the feminism throughout this book. I found it interesting that Dan Brown incorporated so many feministic ideas and still had action. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes pulse-quickening action.

  3. Ever since the movie came out i wondered what exactly the story was about. So after reading this review I think it would be interesting to read. I also heard of the Fibonacci sequence and is everywhere in nature. For example, if you divide the number of female bees in a beehive by the number of males, you will also get the number. It's something very interesting to look up.

That is why I believe that I would like to read the actually book it is based off of. I seem to find that in books I read that are also movies there are better descriptions and more elements to the story. The quotes you did are well done too. They show a deep insight of the book and what future readers should suspect when reading this book. This book seems to have a lot of twists in it and I think it would be cool to read becuase of it.
