Eleven Seconds (Tyler Beaudry)

Title: Eleven Seconds
Where did you find the book? Public library
Brief summary: This is a book of a young hockey player by the name of Travis Roy. He practiced his entire life to get into a notable college team. He went to private schools and other high quality areas. He did get into a good college call Boston University. He didn’t play that much but he did get in a game. He was excited and in the very first eleven seconds he was checked head first into the boards and became paralyzed. For then on he couldn’t feel from the neck down and the rest of the book is the story of how he was able to deal with this tragedy.
Who is the audience for this book? This book is an easier read but I think most people would find this book enjoyable.
What is the author’s style? He is very educational in the writing. When he talks about his experience right after the accident in the hospital you can picture him with all of these machines. Example: “To help patients get accustomed to the feeling of being upright, Shepard used reclining wheelchairs. I’d start out at something like a 45 degree angle, and they would elevate me little by little until I told them to stop. “pg 97
3 passages:
1) “The phones started ringing at 5:45, before the morning commute, and kept ringing with such persistence that it was more than 15 hours later – at 9 P.M.- that the radio station finally closed shop.”
2) “The way I look at it, I’ve passed my first year as a quadriplegic. I’ve learned as entirely new way of living, and have gone through the first round of lessons. But I haven’t graduated yet, and now I’m excited to tackle year two.”
3) “What I could see, though, troubled me. I hit the endboards with my helmet, and when I was falling, my body was out of control. It was going which ever way it wanted, like a stuffed scarecrow someone had tossed onto the ice
Relate: I related to the book because I play sports and I know how into a sport you can get. So when he got it all taken away I knew that that had to very devastating. Other than this I can not relate to his story and hopefully have nothing bad ever happen to me or the others around me.

I reas this book for summer reading and I thought it was really good. It was pretty sad that he could work so hard for something his whole life then get such a bad injury. It shows that you should be gracious of what you have.

  2. Eleven Seconds appears to be a very captivating book. This story appears to be a tale of human companionship in a time of extreme hardship. This book looks like it would be very sad and extremely heartbreaking to read. This book seems not only informative about Travis Roy, but also about paralysis. This novel seems like it might be hard to get into at first, but you will end up getting hooked.

  3. Eleven Seconds sounds like a really good book.I love these kind of books but I would never want for this to happen to anyone. It sounds like a very sad book that anyone would enjoy reading. I bet his life really sucked from the day that he got paralyzed and on.I am sure that Travis Roy fine with this tragedy but he probably regreted playing that game at least if it was me I would have definitely regreted it a lot.I
would have wished that I had never played that game.

  4. I have read this book too. I thought it was one of the best books I have ever read. At times it was sad, but it was a book that you couldn’t stop reading. I didn’t like the ending of the book because his girlfriend ended up leaving him. I found the whole incident shocking because things like that don’t happen everyday.

  5. I also have read this book for summer reading. I thought it was a really good book and I was able to get very into it. I don't usually like to read but this was one of those books I couldn't put down. It's amazing how someone can recover so well and adjust to new life styles after such a tragic incident. The book was sad at parts but it had a very good turn out in the end even though his girlfriend kept leaving him.

  7. I also read this book for summer reading and I'm so glad that I did because its one of the best that I have ever read. It was also a very inspirational sports story and I love those. This book also made me think a lot as well; don't take things in life for granted because it can be taken away from you at anytime when you least expect it. I now try and not take things in my life for granted thanks to a big part from this book.
