Title: Gossip Girl
Author: Cecily Von Ziegesar
Publisher: Warner Books
Pages: 256
I found this book in our school library.
Gossip Girl describes the life that everyone wants. The life style is very high class. The main character, Blair, is the prettiest, most populair girl in school. She is incredibely rich and is an exellent student, not to mention, she is dating her idea of the perfect boy. All seems well until her old best friend, Serena, comes back from private schooling.Serena is the girl that everyone is jealous of and gets everything she wants. When Serena comes back, Blair beleives Serena is taking everything away from her escpecially her boyfriend, Nate. Blair sticks her grounds and comes out on top with her life the way she wants it to be. This novel has a lot to do with eny and pride.
This novel is directed towards teenage girls because it describes a lot like how high school life actually is including envy that everyone has sometime.
The author's writes in a fast pace with a desciptive style. Her writing actually makes you feel like you are in the scenes that she describes with the character. It brings out your emotions and not want to put the book down. "Blair's eyes were automatically drawn to a name toward the bottom of the list: Serena van der Woodsen"
1)"But what bothered her most now was not Carson Daly or even the fact that she ws sitting alone in her house with nothing to do, but the thought that she might spend the rest of her life doing just that-Watching TV"
This stuck of out to me because even though everyone thought Serena was so perftect, she let her social life take over and now she has nothing to make of herself for ther future.
2)"You must model for us" Although Serena had no future plans, she lived with the moment and took whatever oppurtinity to keep her happy even though she was going through a emtionally rough time.
3)"I have a practice SAT tomorow morning" Blair is giving Serena excuses to keep her life the way she likes it with no one to show her up which is how most girls think.
I found myself thinking of a lot of situations i can relate to in this book. A lot of girls feel envious of the girl next to her and what to be the center of attention. A lot of drama is revealed just like the age were in now especially at South Hadley high school. Feeling left out is a big thing that every one hates but unfortunatly, we all experience it. all of the things that happen in everyday life, is descirbed in this book. It goes to show you, no matter who you are or where you live, we are all still the same.

The book sounds too much like those T.V. shows on MTV, but I have heard from numerous people that the gossip girl series are fun to read. i like the quotes you chose and also your opinions.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds really good and interesting. It really shows how life is for teenage girls. The reality of this book is outstanding. I believe i would enjoy reading this. It really talks about a lot of issues that a lot of girls have. If every teenage girl read this book, maybe their attitudes would change. I mean there is definatly a lot of envy between people and jealousy. This does seem more like a girl book, but if guys were to read this.. maybe they wouldn't be so judgemental and understand us more. -- Deidre Tocci
ReplyDeleteThis books sounds like something that I would enjoy reading.I would enjoy reading it because I enjoy any books that are about teenagers.I like the quotes that you picked. The first quote was the best because Serena is trying to take everything from Blair and it is not working. This book is a really easy book to relate to. Almost any teenage girl can relate to it.

While it may seem that this is a very girly book, I found it very interesting while I read that summary. I feel that this book takes on a serious societal issue and really challenges it. I have always wondered why people cant just be happy for there peers but have to have the mindset that being the best is the only possibility. I like how this book takes on that problem and shows how Blair dealt with being topped. Instead of being happy for her friend, she grew envious and had a burning desire to top her. I really hope the book took a serious stand on this issue because I feel that it is a very polluting one.
ReplyDeleteFrom your summary this books sounds very interesting and intriguing to read. I like how the book focus is on a real social circle and the problems they face, which relates to real life. I also like the theme being envy and jealousy because it is a real emotion that people face everyday. It sounds like the book addresses the topic and focus on it seriously but with a present day twist. This book is one I would really enjoy because of its real life aspect it has.
ReplyDeleteI have not read any of the books but I am addicted to the show! I can't really relate it to my life since their lives seem so glamourous. I like the theme of being envious and having jealousy it seems to fit the book really well. I really want to start reading the gossip girl series and find out who is gossip girl, I find it a bit strange someone posting information about certain teens lives on the internet. The quotes you chose were really good!- Samantha Holt
ReplyDeleteI have read some of the Gossip Girl books and i love them, they're very good and addicting. I want to start reading them again, but I agree with the theme you chose. The things that happen in the book definately happen because of jealousy and envy and that is was the books are based on. Most of the main characters in these books are very rich but some are richer than the other so they are always competing to be better than the others. Those that aren't as wealthy try and do the same things that the rich kids do and are always trying to fit in. - Melissa Wanat
ReplyDeleteThis book really sounds like something that i would enjoy reading. Most likely because every girl can relate to this type of book about teenagers and what they go through. i also really like your opinions about the book. - sarah pouliot
ReplyDeleteI have not read any of the Gossip Girl books, but was addicted to the show before I started working Monday nights (ugh!). The description of the book sounds just like the TV show, so maybe reading the books would be a good alternative to working Monday nights. I absolutely agree with the way you related to the book, I definitely feel the same tension at SHHS, that the girls in the book feel. Great summary.
ReplyDeleteThis book seems very interesting. I have watched an episode of Gossip Girl on tv and it was very drama filled. I liked the quotes you picked and I would like to start reading these books. Kayla Levreault
ReplyDeleteThis book seems a bit like "The Hills" with a bunch of snobby but extremely good looking females. Sometimes I find these shows funny when I see my little sister watching it. I'm not sure how close this book is to those shows, but I am just not into that stuff. You had a nice presentation in class and a nice online summary which makes up for the weak plot of the book.
