Breaking Dawn (Mariah Blaney)

Title: Breaking Dawn
Author: Stephenie Meyer
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company
Pages: 754
Where I found this book: My sister had it and I have read the three previous books in the collection.

Summary: Breaking Dawn the fourth book in the twilight series has a unique style. The book is broken down into three individual parts. The first and third parts are told from Bella Swans prospective. She has been the main character through out the novels. The second part is told from the point of view of Jacob Black. Jacob has been a very important secondary character in the series. This book is a continuation of the relationship between Bella and her vampire fiance Edward. They take the next big ceremonial step and get married. They conceive a child together and once again trouble is started for Bella and Edward. Their whole relationship has had many dangerous encounters. This time it is because of their daughter. The voulturi, the head of the vampire society, has deemed the child as being immortal. The Cullen family is now on a quest to protect their family member.

Audience: Stephenie Meyers does a good job of trying to appeal to a wide ranged audience. I think the majority of her readers are between young teens and adults. Most readers are female because the book does have some strong romance scenes, but there is some action that could get anyone interested.

Authors writing style: Meyers is a very sophisticated and descriptive writer, but her work is still easy to read and follow. An example of this is: 'He started to pull away – that was his automatic response whenever he decided things had gone too far, his reflex reaction whenever he most wanted to keep going. Edward had spent most of his life rejecting any kind of physical gratification. I knew it was terrifying to him trying to change those habits now.' Chapter 2, p.25

Passages:
1. 'My relationship with Jacob used to be so easy. Natural as breathing. But since Edward had come back into my life, it was a constant strain. Because – in Jacob’s eyes – by choosing Edward, I was choosing a fate that was worse than death, or at least equivalent to it.'Chapter 4, p.64

These lines represent the strains that an intimate relationship can have on a friendship. Bella and Jacob are having a hard time continuing the friendship they had while she is with Edward.

2. 'When you loved the one who was killing you, it left you no options. How could you run, how could you fight, when doing so would hurt that beloved one? If your life was all you had to give your beloved, how could you not give it? If it was someone you truly loved' Book One Preface, p.1

This passage represents how important love is and what a big role it plays in peoples lives. Bella faces a life or death chance every time she is with Edward but she doesn't care because she knows that they both love each other unconditionally.

3. 'My relationship with Jacob used to be so easy. Natural as breathing. But since Edward had come back into my life, it was a constant strain. Because – in Jacob’s eyes – by choosing Edward, I was choosing a fate that was worse than death, or at least equivalent to it' Chapter 4, p.64

I thought this passage was interesting. It shows how hard it is to maintain a friendship with a guy when you have entered an intimate relationship.

Interaction with the book: I was not able to relate to the book to much because it is a very mythical book with many aspects that are not true. But I was able to find some similarities to this book and what happens in real life. When Bella and Jacobs friendship is ending because Bella got a boyfriend, that is something that happens in real life and allows people to relate with it.

  1. I can't seem to get past the second novel, but hopefully i will be able to soon so that I can read this one! I can't believe Edward and Bella got married, that's great! I'm not that big of a fan of vampires and nonsense novels like that, but this series seems to keep my attention. This novel seems like a lot of exciting happenings occur, so I am determined to get through the whole series! I enjoy the way Meyer writes, you can visualize whats happening at the time!

  2. I already read this book and its an amazing book. She's right with not being able to relate to the book because it something that couldn't really happen in real life. I like all the quotes she decided to do. The book is just like she explains it and i think she did a really good job.

I didn't really enjoy this book. I thought it a little too crazy and Bella seemed out of character with her emotions. And when everyone starts calling Jasper, Jaz, it made it seem like we (the readers) were missing some inside joke. I read later that Stephanie always refered to him as Jaz in her head but that makes her seem kind of bad if she never introduced him like that in the books before this one.
