Flags of our Fathers (Collin Ford)

Flags of our Fathers
James Bradley
Bantam Books
384 pages
I found this book at the school library.
Summary- Flags of Our Fathers is a book based on one of the most historic moments in American history. It tells the powerful story of the journey of the six men who raised the American flag after American forces took Iwo Jima, Japan, during World War II. One of those men was John Bradley, the authors father. John Bradley never told his family about his experiences on Iwo Jima, but after his death a box of letters and the famous photograph of the six men raising the flag were found among his personal assets. James Bradley used these documents to retrace his fathers and all the other men in his company’s footsteps during one of the most gruesome battles of World War II. However, Flags of Our Fathers also shows what the soldiers lives were like after they returned home. The fame of being in one of the most historic pictures mixed with the belief that they were leaving their fellow soldiers behind were tragic on the three of the six men that raised the flag who made it off Iwo Jima alive. When ever James asked his father about what happened on Iwo Jima, he simply replied “The real heroes of Iwo Jima were the guys that never came back.”
Audience- The audience for this book would be anyone who likes military history because of its powerful storyline of one of the most historic battles in American history.
Writing Style- The author uses a descriptive writing style to capture the true essence of the story.
“The fate of the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries was being forged in blood on the island of Iwo Jima and others like it in the Pacific, as well as in North Africa, parts of Asia, and virtually all of Europe,” (Bradley 1)
Passages-
“Not many Americans make it to Iwo Jima these days. It is a dry wasteland of black volcanic ash that reeks of sulfur,” (Bradley 6)
I picked this passage because it shows how something so important and crucial to victory back during World War II is almost nothing now.
“I wanted to know them as Marines, as fighting men who were also comrades. But I also wanted to know them as boys, ordinary kids before they became warriors,” (Bradley 7)
I picked this passage because it makes me think of my grandfather who was drafted in WWII, and instantly turned from a boy into a soldier.
“ Death became demystified, an occupational hazzard. The Marines quickly saw that even heroes can die,” (Bradley 192)
I chose this passage because it shows the physiological effect on the Marines and how they saw death as an everyday occurrence.
My Relationship-
I read this book for the first time in eighth grade, and I had a very hard time understanding it. I didn’t understand the view point of the book, and it was too long for me to get into. However, last summer I saw the movie which made the book much easier to understand this time around. I actually enjoy this book and I own the movie. This has turned out to be one of my favorite war novels of all time.

I love reading books and watching movies about war stories, and the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima is one of my favorite ones. I like the quotes that you chose because they really explain the novel and what was going on at the time. This book seems very interesting and I plan on reading it in the future. -Corey Whelihan

  3. You really did a great job in summarizing this book.I would not enjoy this book since I don't like books that have to do history.I wouldn't ever read a book like this unless it was a book that I had to read for my history class.I really liked your relationship with this book but I don't think that I would ever relate to it this way.I am glad that you liked it and that you understood it the second time around. Anyone who likes history should read this book because it seems like you would enjoy it.

  6. I feel like after reading this this book would appeal to me because my grandfather went to Iwo Jima in WW2. From what I know about Iwo Jima and the summary, I think this would be one of those books that has never ending action. The first passage struck me, its hard to think so many lives were lost over a piece of volcanic rock. But it did help to win the war.

  9. I have never read this book but based on the discription it sounds really moving. It's nice that you were able to relate to the storyline. I also think that it is interesting that the father never says anything about his experience at Iwo Jima. It makes me think of instances where I've learned about my family's history long after the events have happened. My grandfather was in the military during the Korean War. I think that this is a book that I would like because I find history pretty cool.

  10. I had actually just watched this movie last week in A.P. United States History class, the movie gave a great representation of what Colin is demonstrating in his summary. Colin does a great job of summarizing up the story of 'Flags of our Fathers'. The fathers response to the question of what had happened in Iwo Jima just goes to show how bad things were in the battle. It goes to show how much people respected soldiers who fought in that war.

I think I will enjoy this book because it contains historcial information that I love to read about. I also liked your quotes and it strucked me in different ways.

  15. I've seen the movie of this book last year in history. From what I've seen and the summary I just read, I feel that summary Collin presents is fairly accurate of the story. I liked this story-line a lot in the movie and it was very inspirational to me. I definitely would read a book like this because it involes our history in an action-packed and exciting way.

  16. This is in fact one of my all time favorite war movies. I have never read the book but a lot of times it ends up being better then the movie, what’s your opinion on this? The emotion and tragedy mixed with the courage and triumph just all comes together to make an incredible story. And the fact that it’s all true is the cherry on top. I can not even imagine what being in that battle would be like. And to be accused of leaving your men behind after seeing friends die and fighting through hell, I don't know what I would do. I liked your summery and I think I want to read the book now to compare it to the movie.

  17. the movie version of this book is one of my favorite movies because its so emotional and shows the aspect of war and at home after being in battle. “ Death became demystified, an occupational hazzard. The Marines quickly saw that even heroes can die,”I really like that you picked this quote. It shows how soldiers they realize death is real and it isn't unavoidable.

  18. I have yet to see the movie or read the book about this story. This kind of story is very appealing to me. It is a story about a real person, a real event, real everything. Also the WWII background makes it very interesting. There are countless WWII stories that remain untold but, its always refreshing to hear of another heroic tale that has made its way out of the battlefield. The descriptive writing style is another factor that draws me in. Im finding it quite impossible not to want to read this book.
