I got this book from my friend Ari.
Summary -
This book is about sixteen year old Ruby McQueen. Who lives in Nine Mile Falls with her mother and her little brother. The summer or her junior year is not what Ruby thought it would be. She ends up falling in love with her neighbor, Travis Becker, Who has a big reputation as a rich bad boy in town. Ruby knows that he is bad news but he rides a motorcycle, and that’s all that Ruby needed to know. Throughout the book Travis gets Ruby into more trouble then she thought including breaking and entering, robbery, the cops, and near death experiences.
Audience - I think the audience of this book is directed to teenage girls. mostly because girls aroudn Rubys age can really relate to what she goes through in this book. im not to sure guys would enjoy this book as much.
writing style - Caletti's writing style is exciting and easy to read and understand. "I shut my eyes against Travis Beckers back, and when I thought I couldn't take any more, he went faster. Up a notch of speed, and I closd my eyes, aquinched them tight and prayed simply to get out of there safely, though i wouldnt blame God or anyone else for not listening to someone who had gotten herself into such a mess." (Caletti 34) The way Caletti talk in this passage is much how she talks in the rest of the book.
Passages -
“I’m not usually a reckless person. What happened the summer of my junior year was not about recklessness. It was about the way a moment, a single moment, could change things and make you decide to try to be someone different.” (Coletti 1)
- I picked this passage because of the feel it gives off to the reader. the reader feel intreagued and wants to keep going. It really sets off the book, and allows the reader to get hooked and interested in the story from the very start.
“There is nothing that can make you feel quite as guilty as walking into a quiet house full of sleeping people, people who are dreaming gentle dreams and who don’t know enough to suspect you of wrongdoing.” (Coletti 96)
- I picked this passage because it really gives the reader a good look at Ruby and thye effect that Travis had on her. Travis could of gotten Rubby to do anything no matter how bad it was. Thats an important angle to the story. So this quote was agreat way to show how Ruby also really felt about what was going on.
“Longing has lead to great things. Every great discovery and accomplishment has its base in longing. It’s only when you look to someone to fill that longing that there are problems.” (Coletti 137)
- I picked this passage because of the message it gives off to the reader. It also gives the reader a chance to understand more about the relationship between Ruby and Travis. Ruby went looking for Travis. It didnt exactly come along naturally so with that came all of the problems following their relationship.
The way I interacted with this book is by being able to relate to a lot of things that go on in Ruby’s life. Ruby has to deal with boys and relationship problems which most girls going into their junior year have had to deal with. Also when ruby gets pressured into doing things that she knows is wrong, I really feel that I could relate to time when you are pressured buy your peers at school or at a party to do things your not comfortable with.

This seems like a really good book. It would keep my interest just because of all the action that seems to be throughout the book. I enjoy books i can realte to or at least understand on a personal level and this book seems as if it would do that. I also think id enjoy it because her writing style is easy to understand. It'd be a good, quick read!
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds really interesting. I enjoy reading easy to understand books that are written like teen girls speak. I find that when a book is written so that it is easy to understand, I enjoy it much more than the books that I have to decipher what the words mean. I also thin that this book has enough action to keep me entertained. Teen books are definately an interest because I can easily relate to them.
ReplyDeleteIt seemed like you really enjoyed this book and I want to read it now. The writers easy reading style and teenage point of view makes it seem like the perfect beach book. I think reading books about people in similar situations as we go through makes us feel better that we aren't alone. This book seems really interesting because it shows how when we are young and 'in love' we're willing to do almost anything. Ruby seems to get into a lot of trouble and makes you wonder if the boy is worth it.

ReplyDeleteThis book sounds really interesting. It seems like it would be easy to keep your attention because of all the different things that Ruby gets into because of Travis. I like books like this that have a lot of action because it never gets boring and you just want to keep reading it to find out what happens next. I liked the first quote be cause it's really true because if you do one thing and make one wrong decision you can become a diffterent person.

I definitly would probably find myself reading this because first off, I'm a sucker for the whole love/relationship thing and second, I love bad boys.(lol) Also, I think I would be able to relate because there have been times when my friends or people I care about have pressured me, or convinced me to do something that I knew was wrong. However, that's part of growing up, you make mistakes and learn who your real friends are.
