Slumdog Millionaire (Joe Kelly)

Slum dog millionaire, Vikas Swarup, Random House Group LTD, 318 pp.

I found the book in my bathroom reading material.

Summary: a young Indian man named Ram, with hopes of beginning a financially stable life has his prayers answered when he answers all the questions right on a cash prize game show. But when this lower class orphan’s status is brought into question and the idea that he might have cheated arises, those dreams are quickly compromised. He finds himself being tortured in a run down jail sell and eventually answering a series of questions to try and explain his trivial knowledge of the game shows questions. He tells tales of his hardships and lessons to prove himself worthy of accepting his rightful prize of several million rupees witch is close to one million dollars in U.S currency. But as we look through his past we see a hard life that although has served him in this scenario, must have been hard to live with.

The audience is those who enjoy a comeback kid or underdog victory, as the perseverance and adversity of Ram prove to be just that.

Swarup enjoys using a question and answer style to make the novel more realistic and understandable. He has a very descriptive style with excellent attention to characterization and painting a picture.

“do you notice when you breath, no you just simply know that you are doing it, I did not go to school, and I did not read, but I tell you, I knew those answers,” (18).

Passages:
“So do I need to know your whole life to know how you knew the answers?” (18).
I chose this passage because it truly epitomizes the idea that one persons life holds so many lessons learned and that no one can even imagine everything that someone else has experienced and that’s what makes us all different.

“Can we call him Jupiter?”
“no he is the smallest we can only call him Pluto”(60).
I chose this one because it shows how belittling some people can be and how just because someone looks small they are most likely going to be judged as weak. It bothers me.

“Last night I was arrested for winning a quiz show” (1)
I chose this because it sarcastically shows how unjust this Indian country is. I like the way that you can feel the speaker’s angst and sarcasm and almost confusion. I thought it really gave a good idea of how unfair the setting was.
My Relationship:This book was weird because I first only watched the movie thinking that it would be similar to the book. Wrong. They ended up being completely different so I actually ended up having to read for once. But I’m glad because I liked the book better as did a lot of other people I think that the story is valuable and inspiring to anyone who is willing to give it time to be read, but it is slow in some parts. Over all I didn’t mind it at all and would

  2. This book sounds like a very interesting book. The author takes a very unique approach by involving the child's whole life into one game show. I would like to read this book in the near future. This summary really grabbed my attention.

  6. I think this book would be good because i saw the movie and it was great... The book is probably just as good and i would see it for the reason of comparison. i would like to see how they transformed the book into a movie.. I also liked your quote choices...

  7. The book sounds like it would be a really good read. It seems like the man who won this lottery has been treated unfairly by the upperclass, a common theme in many societies. I like the qoute Joe Kelly chose, the one about calling the man pluto because I agree that people in society judge others by their outside appeariences too much. Though it seems like a good read I don't ever see myself reading this book unfortunatly.

  8. Currently, we are watching this movie in my Great Thinkers class and it's amazing. It's very heart touching and I could definitly see myself reading this novel because books are always better than movies. I find it interesting also because a lot of people are set on the fact that you have to be book smart to anwser tough questions, which isn't so, some of the hardest question can be related to what has happened to you throughout you're life. Sometimes it's experiences that get you farther than an education.

  9. I am also watching this movie in my E Block Great Thinkers class. It's such a heartfelt story and it shows you that anybody can come up from the slums and get rich. The quotes were a great choice because they really depict what happens in the novel.

  10. I am in the same boat as my friend malik. We are in the same class so we have already discussed our feeling about the movie. We feel the same way so there is no need to restate it. I am surprised that the book ended up nothing like the movie. your quotes are very well done, especially the last one. they all give an excellent idea as to what is going on.

  12. This book seems very intersting. I saw the beginning of the movie and it really kept my attention. I think it would be a good book because a lot is said through a simple game show. Hopefully in the future i'll be able to read this book!

  14. This book seems enjoyable to read. It talks about the cultural differences and teaches you something you don't learn everyday. I beleive i watched a movie similar to this recently. It's weird to compare the intensity of the ages from kids from other countries.

  16. We are watching this movie right now in our great thinkers class and I think that it is pretty interesting. At first I thought that the movie was kind of hard to follow, but then i realized that there were multiple things taking place all at once. I think since I find the movie quite interesting that I would probably read this book if i ever found the time to. I like the quote that Joe chose and spoke about the Indian country being unjust and unfair because Jamal got arrested for winning a game show.

  18. I really liked this movie. It was really sad but inspiring. I think I’d enjoy the book. I agree how most of the time the book is better than the movie. The Reader by Bernhard Schlink is a good example of that. I think that judgment is a common topic for books. People judging others before they ever know them. We’ve experienced a lot of that in class this year.

  21. Im a large fan of the movie and the book seems equally enticing. The quality and integrity of books are usually lost when they are made into movies but this seems to be quite a large exception. I though the pluto quote was very clever because it really showed how other people viewed him as less of a person. Im glad to see though that Ram is able to prove them wrong by winning the game show.
