Thursday's Child (Rachel Vaselacopoulos)

Thursday’s Child
Sonya Hartnett
Candlewick Press

I found this book in the school library.

Thursday’s Child is about a girl named Harper. Harper lives with her Dad, Mom, Sister (Aubrey), and her three brothers (Devon, Tin, and Caff). In the beginning of the book Tin falls into a sink hole down by the river. Tin was so close to death but he dug his way out and the family found him. This happened while the mother was giving birth to Caff. Tin was always the baby of the family and got all the attention, and now it was going to the baby. From then on he starting digging under ground. The house falls down because of Tin’s digging and the family is struck by poverty from then on. Devon goes to work for Mr.Cable and returns home empty handed. Caff falls into a well and dies, and Audrey goes away to work for Cable. Devon also leaves the family to work, and Harper is now an only child because Tin lives underground. Later Mr.Cable touches Audrey so Tin kills him. Tin also finds gold and the family now has some money. In the end the two sisters move to the ocean where Harper has always dreamed of.

The audience of the book is anyone because the story isn’t directed to a certain age or gender.

The authors writing style is descriptive. Hartnett always uses so much detail when introducing or describing something. Pg 124 “He had the bluest of eyes, the creamiest skin, the most magnificent shock of scarlet hair that I had ever seen.” (When describing Harper’s crush Izzy).

Pg. 2 “Everyone knows Tin was born to burrow, he was born to the task like a hare.” This passage was interesting because Harper’s brother lived underground.
Pg. 182 “I tried in those winter days, to stay away from the house as often as I could.” This passage was sad because Harper didn’t want to go home because of her dad’s drinking problem.
Pg. 259 “The ocean is dazzling, as I knew it would be; the first time I saw it, it dazzled me more than my first sight of gold.” This passage struck me because it was her dream to see the ocean, so this description was joyful.

I couldn’t really relate to this book but a lot of the book was very interesting. It was sad that everyone child either dies or left the family. The author made it interesting by showing each child’s departure. I thought this was a good book even though some parts were weird.

  1. This seems like a very different kind of story. It doesn't seem like the average novel. I don't know if I would like it or not. The story sounds like something that will keep you interested just because of how strange it is, but I feel like I'd have to read the first couple of chapters to truly know if I would enjoy reading it. I also liked the last quote because you can really understand how important the ocean was to her and that her dream of living there was everything she thought it would be.

  2. This book seems very odd. Though it seems to have a lot of things happen throughout it, i'm not sure i would enjoy it. I'm not really sure i would enjoy reading it just becuase it seems weird, Tin living underground and what it seems like people killing other people. I do like the passage she took for describing Hartnett's writting style becuase it is very descriptive. You can picture what Izzy looks like. Having good description in a book is really important, though sometimes you can have too much that it gets boring. I love reading books that are described well, but i don't think i will read this book.

  3. I don't think this would really keep me intersted. I dont like books with to much description. Also it just seems to unrealistic for my liking. I like books that it could actually happen and im not so sure someone could in reality live underground. I don't plan on reading this unless im made to, but it does sound quite different!
