The Bean Trees
by: Barbara Kingsolver

336 pgs.
I found this novel that was recommended to me by a friend who read it in the past.
The novel The Bean Trees is about a girl who wants to break the stereotypes of women named Taylor back in the day. She left her home town because she didn’t want to lead the same live she did like all the other girls. She decided to buy a car and take a road trip. On the way, she encounters a woman who hands her a baby and walks away. She decides to keep the baby who she names Turtle. She realizes the child she took has had some problems growing up. The child was mentally and physically abused. Taylor and the child move into a hotel room and she finds work being a maid there. By the end of the novel, Taylor and Turtle bought a house and are very happy with how their lives turn out.
This book could be an audience for anyone who likes to read a good book. The tone of the book was humorous.
The way it was written never made you feel bad about Taylor’s life, you were always happy for what she was doing. "And me. I was the main ingredient." Pg 246. This shows how Turtle is finally becoming a happy child. And the way it was written made you happy also.
“It didn’t seem to matter to Turtle, she was happy where she was. . . . She watched the dark highway and entertained me with her vegetable-soup song, except that now there were people mixed in with the beans and potatoes” pg 130. This passage stuck me because it finally shows that Turtle is confident enough with her life to be able to speak and finally act like a normal child.
“But I stayed in school. I was not the smartest or even particularly outstanding but I was there and staying out of trouble and I intended to finish." Pg 25. This quote shows how she wanted a better life for herself and tried to make the best out of her situation.
"Starting right now, you've only got one Ma in the whole world. You know who that is?" pg 238. This shows how Taylor is finally started to except Turtle being her daughter.
I think I interacted with the book well. I couldn’t relate to most of the stuff that Taylor was going through but some parts I definitely did. I understand how she felt when she wanted to stay in school to keep her out of trouble and I feel like these days you need to be in school to do that.

ReplyDeleteThis book sounds really weird. Im not sure if i would read it but it sounds ok. the review was written well, it didn't give to much information to give the book away. the quotes you chose were good choices, they draw the reader in to want to know more. i may consider reading this book.
ReplyDeleteThe title of this book caught me right away so thats why i decided to read your report. I dont think i would enjoy this book at all. The plot seems boring to me, but i wouldn't know for sure because i haven't read this book. It sounds like there isn't a lot of action happening throughout the book which also makes me not like it. I feel that all the quotes you chose really gives a good idea about what this book is about. I wouldn't consider reading this book based on the plot given here.
