Title: My Sisters Keeper
Author: Jodi Picoult
Publisher: Washington Square Press
Pages: 423~
This book was recommended to me by my friend shannon.
Summary: My Sisters Keeper is a novel about a girl named Anna who is sueing her parents for medical emancipation. She is not sick, however her sister kate is very sick with Leukemia. Anna is forced to practically give her body to her sister. When ever her sister needs something Anna must undergo many surgeries in order for her sister to survive. She eventually gets fed up with her parents practically ruling her body. This leads her to go forth with getting a lawyer, and will later have to face the facts on what may happen to her sister who she loves.
Audience: I think the audience for this book would be mothers, and teenage girls. I think this would be for them because its a sad book, and makes you think about how precious your life and your family members lives truley are no matter how much you may forget some times.
Writing Style: The Authors writing style sometimes used bigger words when talking about Kate's medical problems or needs, but for the most part the writing was simple and easy to read. "It's not always odd to see promyeloctyes in a CBC, but when we checked Kate's under a microscope, we could see abnormalities,(33)."
Passage1: The first passage that really stuck out to me was on the first page of the book when Anna was talking about how and why she born. She tells the readers how she wasnt the result of a cheap bottle of wine or even the heat of the moment. She was born to save her older sister. The doctors managed to make a perfect match for her sister. That way Anna could save her sister from dieing, (7).
Passage2: The second passage that really stuck out to me was when Anna got a lawyer, and her mom was just informed. Their family was at the hospital, and Anna's mom recieved a letter saying that she was being sued. Her mother was so angry that Anna was doing this, because she knew that Kate needed her sister to survive,(51).
Passage3: The third passage that stuck out to me was when Anna actually went and got a lawyer. The lawyer actually decided to take her case, and for free! "There's way too much to explain, and so I do the best I can. "It's not God. Just my parents," I say. "I want to sue them for the rights to my own body,(7). This stuck with me because it was a main point in the book. This showed how she actually went forward with her actions.
Last: I interacted with this book very well. It was a really well written book that i fell in love with. I could in a way relate to it because every family has their problems. They fight over things and later on regret it, and through out this book you could tell thats how this family was. Even though one of the daughters had cancer they still had there littler problems. In this book there was also parts that really spoke to me. Just the way the author wrote it really had meaning and at times was very sad.

I read this book for summer reading one year and I absolutely loved it. I found this book to be extremely sad, but I couldn't put it down. I agree that book is well written and it was a story line that made you fall in love with it.I couldn't imagine being brave like Anna and following through with suing her parents.I thought this book was realistic on the way this situation caused a division in the family.
ReplyDeleteI read this book for summer reading too and it was really good. I had heard it was a really good book and it was hard to put it down and I agree. I didn't want to stop reading it. Anna's family was falling apart because of her decision to sue her parents. Her mother hated what she was doing and repeatedly told her that she was killing her sister but Anna didn't back off. At the end there is a huge twist and it's shocking. I would absoulutly recomend to read this book.

Nicole Chivas- I read this book for summer reading as well and thought it was really good. The ending it shocking that you couldn't see it coming. I agree the book was well written. If I was Anna I don't know if I could have gone through with suing my parents. It's really awful that she thinks and know she was born to help save her sister's life. I would recommend this book to any girl.
ReplyDeleteI also read this over a summer and I couldn’t agree more with what everyone said. It was one of those books that you just wanted to keep on reading and find out what was going to happen with everyone. Was Anna going to end up winning the case? Was her sister going to die because of this? Questions that needed to be answered. I have to say though that the movie was nothing compared to the book.
ReplyDeleteI read this book about a year ago and it is one of my favorites. After each chapter I completed I did not want to put the book down. I thought it was very sad and unexpected that Anna died, it seemed like all of her hard work was put to waste. This book kept me on the edge of my seat because I kept wanting to know what would happen next. I agree that this book would be recommended for mothers and teenage girls because it is a sad book about a family who becomes divided when a little girl gets sick. I think that anyone who reads this book will enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI read this book for summer reading last year. It is definitely my favorite book. Though it is very sad, I could not put it down. I liked that each chapter was told in a different person's perspective, so that the reader can see what every character in the book is feeling. I think that this book could be for readers of all ages, but I agree that it is directed towards teenage girls and mothers.
ReplyDeleteI read this book last year for summer reading. It was the best book I have ever read. It was written so well, and I liked how it should different characters point of view. It was also sad, but it was a shocking book that I could not put down. Everyone I’ve known that has read this book thinks it is amazing. I think it is an appropriate book for teenagers. It shows the audience to be grateful to what you have.
ReplyDeleteI read this last year for Summer Reading. I loved it too. It was so dramatic and heartwarming at the same time, and I was excited to hear it was made into a movie after I read it, although the movie really did suck. Did you read the book first or see the movie first? Usually the book is always better, and in this case it’s also true. I like that you put in, “She tells the readers how she wasn’t the result of a cheap bottle of wine or even the heat of the moment. She was born to save her older sister.” That part of the book really struck me too, and it made me really angry at the parents for being so heartless.
ReplyDeleteI read this book for summer reading last year. It was by far the best book i've ever read. The story is suprises, heartbreaking, and inspiring. I saw the movie for this book which was very dissapointing because they changed how the story went. Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors because her way of writing helps readers feel the way she wants them to feel while reading this book. Her descriptive words paint a picture in the readers mind.

ReplyDeleteI read this book for summer reading last year. The book was very well thought out and written good. I always wanted to read at night and plus I had to read it for the summer reading essay. I laughed, and I cried it was such a good story line and book... even though i didn't finish the book. Someone ruined it for me and told me what happened so i didn't finish it.
I read this book last year for summer reading and it was amazing. It was one of the best books I have read. I agree that even in a family that has a member who has something as awful as cancer, there are other problems that exist too. I liked the quotes that you picked because I remember reading those and they easily could stick out to the reader. I also agree that the author does use some big words and that are even difficult to pronounce at times.

ReplyDeleteMy mom read this book and she thought is was a very deep book. In this story it could actually happen in the real world thats why i think so many people love this book because they can relate to it. This book also seems like it would be hard to read since it is such a sad story. Many people have read this that i know and it seems like i would like to book.
When I read this book for the summer, I couldn't down for one moment. I tried to put myself in Anna's shoes, and I don't know what I would have done. I related to this book, because one of my cousin's had and died from Leukemia. It was hard at times to watch what she went through, and in the end, maybe it was better for her to stop suffering. This one book brought on many emotions that I have never felt when reading a book.
ReplyDeleteJoseph Crespo said........ I really wanted to read this book even though it seems more of a girls choice. I saw the movie when it came out just recently with my girlfriend and the movie had almost the whole theater in tears. I wouldn't be suprised if the book did the same. Ill definitly take this novel into consideration the next time I read.

ReplyDeleteI read this book a couple of years ago, I really enjoyed reading it. What made it good for me was that stem search research is an out going problem in our society now a days. It is a great read for kids our age. It really touched my heart and would bet that who ever reads it would fall in love with it and enjoy it alot.
This novel by Jodi Picoult sounds like a very moving and touching story. I loved how you summarized the book without giving away the whole book. I have not read this book yet but I would consider it because I don't really like sad stories. Again, good job on the summary!

ReplyDeleteI read this book over the summer and I didn't love it as much as everyone said I would. It was really slow at parts and seemed to drag on in a few chapters. I did think the overall story was very interesting and the end had me really shocked. It was also very sad reading about the struggles of having Leukemia and having to live with it.

ReplyDeleteI had to watch this movie in theaters with my family. I didnt want to see it because I knew it was all depressing and stuff. Even though it was sad it was a pretty good movie. I never read the book though.
I saw this movie in theaters. It was super sad, I'm not one to cry during any movies but this had me in tears all the way to the credits. I have not read the book so when the ending came and I was in tears and everyone else looked upset, I didn't understand until a friend explained why. I think just from what I hear about Jodi Picoult, it's a good book, I really look forward to reading it.
