The Summoning (Rachel LaRocque)

Title: The Summoning
Author: Kelley Armstrong
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers
Pages: 416

I found this book at Borders

Summary: All Chloe Saunders dreamed about was being normal. She wanted to make new friends and maybe meet a boy, but after seeing her first ghost she knows her life will never be the same. Soon the ghosts were everywhere, demanding her attention. After fainting from the excitement, she wakes in Lyle House, a special home for troubled teens. At first, Lyle House seems a pretty okay place, except Chloe is diagnosed with. Gradually Chloe gets to know the other kids at the home; Simon and his obnoxious brother Derek, loathsome Tori, and Rae. Once Chloe’s hallucinations don’t stop, she realizes that she is a necromancer, someone who can communicate with ghost. After Chloe secretly reading the others files, she begins to realize that there is something that binds them all together and it not their troublesome behaviors. Together they soon discover the secrets that are lying within the wall of Lyle house.

The audience of this book is young teens because it talks about problems that teens are dealing with today.

Kelley Armstrong’s writing style flows, is clear, and gets straight to the point. “The thumping sounded again, and I could see them – in my mind- pulling their limp bodies along. The rustle of their clothing and dried flesh. The clatter and clicks of their bones. Their spirits trapped inside. Trapped in their corpses,” (page 240).

“The man let out a snarl that echoed down the hall. A student rounded the corner, and we almost collided. I stammered an apology and glanced over my shoulder. The janitor was gone. I exhaled and closed my eyes. When I opened them, the blue uniform shirt was inches from my face. I looked up...and let out a shriek,” (page 25) I liked this quote because it was the first time Chloe interacted with a ghost and showed how fearful she was of this power she possesses.

“I’d been staring at the search term for at least five minutes. One word. Necromancer. Was it even English? I move the cursor in front of the word and typed "define." When I hit enter, the screen filled. Necromancer: one who practices divination by conjuring up the dead,” (Page 105) this quote stood out to me because this is when Chloe realizes that the doctors of Lyle House have been lying to her about being diagnosed with schizophrenia, and that she is actually a necromancer.

“I dragged myself until I was at the door. My fingertips brushed the wood. I pushed. It didn’t budge. Locked. I backed up and slammed my fist against it, screaming banging, calling for help. Cold fingers wrapped around my bare ankle,” (Page 236) I enjoyed reading this scene in the book because it was the most suspenseful because Chloe had gotten locked in a crawl space and accidentally rose the corpses of the people who were buried down there.

I enjoyed reading this book because there were many things I could relate to. Chloe Saunders is a teenager who at first is dealing with the same high school pressures that I am going through today such as friends and difficult classes. As Chloe moves on to Lyle House she desires to be accepted by the others staying there. I believe that everyone can relate to this desire for acceptance and, in their own way, connect themselves with this book.

  1. Ashley Lapierre- This book seems like it would interest me. I watch a show, called medium, that is very similar. The passage that talks about when she is looking up the definition of some, strange, word really hooked me in because I could see everything playing out. I like this author's writing style because it doesn't seem to bore you. They keep you interest, while also keeping the vocabulary simple so that the reader can get a clear glimpse of imagery. An interesting topic plus simple vocabulary equals a great book to read.

  2. From the summery you gave and the quotes that you wrote down this book really caught my eye. When I’m sick I stay home and watch all of the ghost shows and this book seems like it would touch on those same basics. There seems to be a lot of imagery which I like. I don’t want to read and have to think about what’s going on; I want it to play out plain and simple. Like a movie.

  3. Wow, this book seems very interesting! It sounds a little creepy about how the main character is constantly being contacted by ghosts, especially when you mentioned Chloe being trapped in a crawl space! This book also seems very intreging, with a big mystery hidden inside. I would think the mystery would be why are those certain kids in a house that is filled with people that are lying to them. That would be very interesting to find out. Good book choice!

  4. After reading about this book i want to read it. It seems really good, and exactly the sort of book that I would read. The mysterious aspect to it really intrigues me. I think that in this book there must be a lot of conflict and drama, since they are teenagers and how she eneded up in that place after a night not knowing why. I really liked the way all the quotes sounded and I want to read this book to see how it ends up.

  9. Rachel, I have to say that your summary really got me thinking about reading this book. I am not that into ghost stories, except for maybe Supernatural, but this one seems like it is also mystery, and i enjoy those. I liked the quotes you chose, because they helped give me a better idea of what the story is about. From the way you described it, I will also like the writing style. I love authors who give detail, but do it write to the point. They just give me enough to get my imagination working.

In the quotes you used, the author seems very descriptive making you feel like you are there. I like reading scary stories and this one sounds really good. You are right about the feeling of needing to fit in, because a lot of teenagers feel that way.

  11. I really liked your essay, it really gave me an idea of what the book is about. I'm not one to read a lot of books but this book seemed to have sparked my attention and interest. I do enjoy a good book here or there, but it does take a lot for me to pick up a book and read it, your essay has given me some motivation to read. Especially books that highlight problems in the world, its sometimes nice to read a story that pertains to problems.
