I found this book at Marshall's when I was shopping. I was looking for a good book, and this one seemed very interesting.
In this book there is a whole different world; a world were vampires are known. These vampires are marked with a crescent moon on their forehead as they begin their change. They get a horrible cough that doesn't leave until they enter the house of night and begin their training. While there Zoey Redbird, the main character, has to try and fit in when she was destined to stand out. She discovers some odd powers, and tries to make things better at the house of night for everyone.
The audience for this book would be people who are interested in different types of vampire books because this book describes a world that's rarely thought of.
Style: The author's writing style is very descriptive. The authors use many adjectives to paint a clear picture of what is happening. "My grandma's house sat between two lavender fields and was shaded by huge old oaks. It was built in 1942 of raw Oklahoma stone, with a comfortable porch and unusually big windows."(30)
Passages: " 'Zoeybird! Are you awake, baby?' I blinked my blurry eyes clear to see Grandma Redbird sitting on a little chair close beside my bed. 'Grandma!' I croaked and reached for her hand. My voice sounded as terrible as my head felt. 'What happened? Where am I?' 'You're safe, Little Bird. You're safe."(44) This passage shows the strong connection between Zoey and her grandmother. I like it because throughout the book she always has trouble thinking of people who care about her, but then she always thinks of her grandmother.
"The first thing I saw was the life-sized Kenney Chesney poster that hung over one of the two beds and the cowboy (cowgirl?) hat that rested on one of the bedside tables- the one that also had the old-fashioned- looking lamp with the base shaped like a cowboy boot. Oh, nu uh. Stevie Rae was a total Okie."(71) I love this passage because I was so surprised by it. I listen to country music, but never expected to read about it in a vampire book. I just love Stevie Rae's character.
"It was Elizabeth! The Elizabeth No Last Name kid who was supposed to be dead. When she saw me her eyes, which were a weird glowing red, widened and then she made an odd shrieking sound before whirling around and disappearing with inhuman speed into the night."(172) I like this passage because it was the first time that Zoey had any interaction with ghosts. She was scared, but interested at the same time. It made me wonder why she could see ghosts when no one else could.
The only part I really related to was the relationship between Zoey and her grandmother. She really cared about her grandmother, and whenever she was upset she needed her. I have a very close relationship with my own grandmother, and find myself talking to her a lot. So, the passages where Zoey showed that relationship stuck to me, but that wasn't all. I also love the passages where Zoey showed her true powers with the elements. She was so surprised by here owns abilities that it made you surprised and interested as well.

I was going to read this for my first quarter book but I just couldn’t get into it. I felt that the author’s way of describing things was a bit out there for me. Also, that the author had an imagination that was too large for me to comprehend. The detail in the book was phenomenal though, and I do agree that a picture could be painted and played out like a movie while reading. This book just wasn’t for me, but it seems like you enjoyed it, good book review.
ReplyDeleteI started a book really similar to this where the vampires always got sick before they turned, and then they were sent to another world to develop powers. I couldn't finish it because it was too unoriginal. It's not the same book though. I don't know if I'd want to read Marked. Way too many people are reading it right now. The conformity is almost tangible and it reminds me of Twilight too much. You already very well know I hated that book. I don't believe I've read a vampire book with country music in it before. I do, however, like the cover design of the book, but that has nothing to do with it's content. I'm not sure if I could get into this book. It sounds like every other vampire story out there, and I like orignal books. I like that they have powers other than sucking blood, being sparkly, and climbing really tall trees though. The quote about the ghost kind of interests me, but obviously that's not what the book's about. I might try to read it, but I don't feel like I could really get into it.
ReplyDeleteI have never read this book before. I am really into the whole vampire type books ever since the twilight series! You did a really good job with your quotes and helping describe this book to everyone. I might have to side with Jess Godek though, because her and I like to read similar things a lot, and if she thinks its a little out there than I am assuming i don't quite have the imagination for it either. Who knows though! Overall you did a wonderful job, and i can't wait to hear about the next book you choose to read.
