Heart of Glass (Morgan Desjardins)

Title: Heart of Glass
Author: Zoey Dean
Publisher: Little, Brown Company
Pages: 297

Where did you find the book?

Originally, A friend of mine was reading the A-List. She said it was good, and told me to read it. I started reading the first book of the A-List series, and have continued all the way to the eighth book.

Who is the audience for this book?

The book is geared towards teenage girls. It has a lot of descriptions on clothing, shopping, boys, and hairstyles.

Brief Summary:

The book is about a particular group of friends that call themselves the A-List. They all live in Beverly Hills, California. They live a lavish life of nice cars, easy jobs, expensive clothes, and connections to everyone. This particular book of the series is based on Cammie and Anna organizing a Teen Vision runway show. It is their punishment for being arrested for trespassing on private beach property. The two girls, who have never been friends, get close. By the end of the book, they are archrivals again. Along with Cammie and Anna’s summer work, the story includes their friends and their love lives.

What is the author’s writing style?

The writing style is fiction. It is written to seem like it is real. The author uses real stores, cities, and life like situations. Page 123 refers to a rehab institute called Ojai, which is made up, making it fiction. Page 7 uses the name Jackson Sharpe as a famous actor. It seems like it could be real but it is a made up name. Page 29 refers to Ben-Hur as an upcoming movie. Ben-Hur is not a real movie.

Three passages that really struck you in some way?

- “I remember so many things about my mom. Her perfume-Rive Gauche. And her smile- how her eyes would take in my face as if seeing me was the most important and beautiful thing in the world. I remember how she used to draw pictures for me, and sing me to sleep, and really listen to me, in a way that maybe no one else ever has. And I mean, I know that isn’t romantic love. But it was real. I had it. And I remember It.” p. 221
I chose this quote because it is the one part of the book that shows Cammie being something other than a rich, mean girl. It shows how she has a heart.

- “There is no one else on the planet like you, Cammie.” P.221

I chose this quote because it made me mad. Ben is the character that says this, and Ben is Anna’s boyfriend. He used to date Cammie. He is basically telling Cammie that she is different. I don’t like Cammie because she is mean, stuck up, and a bad friend. Cammie characterization bothered me because she is a troublemaker for no reason.

- “ She’s taking, like, six classes from Yoga Guy every week. Private classes. At my house.”

This quote shows the theme of the book, which is money. The women in this book don’t work, all they do is shop and spend money. This shows the life of the rich, and how they have private yoga classes everyday at their own house.

Provide how you interacted with the book. What could you relate to? Were there parts that really spoke to you?

I found that I didn’t really connect with the book. I don’t live the kind of life style that is described in the book. Even though the girls are wealthy, they still go through some of the same experiences that I have. I was able to connect with one of the characters named Anna the most. She was from the east coast and moved out west. She is conservative and nice. She went through the same thinking process that I would in select situations.

  1. This book sounds like a really good book.I would enjoy this book because I like to read books in which the audience is teenage girls.I liked how the two girls that never knew each other or were never friends become very close due to the runway show. The first passage makes me feel like not all rich people are mean. There are nice rich people too who do have hearts just like all of the others.

  3. I have read a similar book series called the clique and it was very good. I have been told the A-list is similar and i would like to start reading them.

  4. I have heard about the A-List books and people say they are very good. The summary you gave reminded me of the Gossip Girl books but seem to have more real life problems and situations. It seems like people (especially girls) from around here can relate to these types of books better than the Gossip Girl series. -Melissa Wanat
