Lolita (Rosina Sinigur)

-Title: Lolita
-Author: Vladimir Nabokov
-Publisher:Random House,Inc
-Pages:317 Pages
-I found the book at Barnes and Noble and so I purchased it from there.
-Summary:Humbert Humbert likes young girls. His tragic love was, Annabel Leigh, whose death traumatized him. He finds a place to live which was a room in the house of the widower Charlotte Haze and he decides to stay there because of her daughter,Lolita, who reminds him of Annabel his tragic love.Humbert will do anything to be able to keep Lolita in his life and to reach that goal he plans on killing Haze but he is unable to do so.He picked Lolita up from camp and took her on a road trip.On the road trip Lolita gets sick and so they have to go to the hospital and there she is taken away by a man that wants to take Lolita away from Humbert Humbert so that she doesn't have to suffer anymore.Humbert Humbert tries to locate her but there is no way that he can find her and so he gives up until one day when he gets a letter from Lolita saying that she is pregnant, married and that she needs money. When he goes to see her he is rejected by her and he leaves heartbroken. At the end of the book Humbert gets arrested and put in jail for killins Lolita's husband. He dies in captivity but Lolita dies while giving birth to her baby.

-I think that the audience for this book could be teenagers and up because it deals with things that people go through in relationships.

-The author's writing style is very descriptive. Direct characterization is used and other types of different styles. Passage:"He saw the little dark weapon lying in my palm as if I were offering it to him...I slapped down his outstretched hand and he managed to knock over a box on a low table near him.It ejected a handful of cigarettes."(Pg 297)

-Passage 1:" Divorce proceedings delayed my voyage, and the gloom of yet another World War had settled upon the globe when, after a winter of ennui and pneumonia in Portugal.I at last reached the states. In New York I eagerly accepted the soft job fate offered me: it consisted mainly of thinking up and editing perfume ads."( Pg 32) This passage struck me because it shows how Humbert took the job.He didn't want any other job since this job was closest to Charolette Haze's house and Lolita.

-Passage 2:"But as I traveled campward my anxiety grew.I could not bear to think I might not find Lolita there-or find, instead, another Lolita clamoring for some family friend: not the Farlows, thank God she hardly knew them -but might there not other people I had not reckoned with? Finally, I decided to make the long- distance call I had stimulated so well a few days before...A surprise awaited me when at last the coins had satisfactorily clanked down and a voice was allowed to answer mine." (Pg 106) This really made me think of how he knew that he was too old for the girl and that the girl doesn't want to be with him.He was scared that she would not be at camp on purpose because maybe she had found out that he was the one that was coming to get her. But at last when he heard her voice he felt a little relieved and happier. -

Passage 3:"Under the condition you stop pointing at me that gun.By the way,I do not know if you care for the bizarre, but if you do,I can offer you, also gratis,as house pet, a rather exciting little freak."(Pg 301) This passage struck me because it shows how Lolita's husband didn't want to die.He was scared and so he was offering him stuff like a young wife but still not giving up Lolita even if he was being shot. All that Humbert Humbert wanted was Lolita is her husband offered him that well then he wouldn't have been shot.

While reading this book I didn't interact with it much except the fact that I am teenager myself and I am going through the same stuff. But not like Lolita with a older man and with someone that she doesn't like or even appreciate.I could only relate to that part that we are both teenagers and both in relationships. There weren't any parts that spoke to me.I didn't enjoy reading this book at all.I felt like it was a waste of my time but I picked it and didn't start reading till after I pre-approved the book and it was to late to switch the book. From the reviews that I read online some really liked the book and some really hated it. The only part of the book that I kind of enjoyed was the middle how they went on the road trip and she got sick and that she was taken by Trapp away from Humbert Humbert.

  1. After reading the blurb written, I could actually see myself reading this book. The plot, however creepy it may be, seems like one that can get interesting. I think that it is sad that Anabel died, but I think everything happens for a reason. Rosina, overall, did a good job. The blurb made me want to read it. (I think I will)
