The Hunt for Red October (Andrew Larrier)

The Hunt for Red October, Tom Clancy, naval institute press, 387 pages

My grandfather recommended it

The novel is about a CIA anylist named Jack Ryan and takes place during the cold war. A spy sends a photo of a brand new soviet submarine with a stealth propulsion system. The story then focuses on the captain of the new Russian sub, Markos Ramius. Ramius becomes fed up with his life in the Soviet Union and decides to defect to the United States with the officers of the red October. Before leaving on a test of the stealth drive system, ramius leaves a letter to the head of the soviet navy stating that he intends to defect to the United States. This prompts the soviets to chase the red October to prevent the sub from reaching the United States. This creates tension between the two nations. An American submarine discovers the red October and its stealth drives. Captian ramius fakes a nuclear contamination from the ships reactor to get the crew off the red October. At the same time the Americans scuttle an old submarine to give the illusion of the red October sinking. A Russian attack sub finds the red October and attacks it. The red October narrowly escapes but comes under attack from an undercover KGB agent disguised as a cook. Dr. Ryan kills the KGB agent. To make the wreck of the old American sub look like the Red October they plant components of the Russian sub so when the Russians investigated the wreck it would be more believable.

This book is written for men mostly and or people in the military.

The writing style is somewhat descriptive

“Forty years I've been at sea. A war at sea. A war with no battles, no monuments... only casualties.” This shows ramius becoming fed up with the soviet way of life and resentment towards his commanders.

"Ryan, some things in here don't react well to bullets." Yeah, like me. I don't react well to bullets” I thought it was very funny and it caught my attention while reading it.

“I would like to have seen Montana.” I thought it was funny because everyone in the United States takes Montana for granted and this character died because he wanted to live in Montana.

  1. I don't think I would enjoy reading this book. It almost seems like there is a lot to it. I also wouldn't like to read about the war. It seems like this is a book mostly for guys. When reading what it was about, it seemed very confusing and hard to get into.

  3. This book has a very interesting summary. I would be interested in reading this book because it looks like it has a lot of action in it. I like the passages you chose, but feel you need to explain them and your interection with the book. This book seems to be the genre i like, and hope to read it eventually.

  4. I was interesting in the beginning of the summary, but once it started getting into chasing some submarine I lost interest. Sorry, but I don't think I would really like this book. I don't think it's really my thing.

  5. This sounds like an interesting story. I liked your summary of it because it was brief and did not give away too much information about the book. It seems like a very suspenseful story. I would like to read this novel soon. It sounds action packed and enjoyable.
