Someone Like You (Ari Demakis)

Title: Someone Like You
Author: Sarah Dessen
Publisher: Penguin Group
Pages: 281

My sister recommended this book to me, she said it was very good and I would enjoy it. Someone Like You is about two teenagers trying to make it through tough times. Scarlett is about sixteen years old when she falls in love with the boy of her dreams, Michael. The two get very close and before you know it Michael gets in a motorcycle accident and dies. Scarlett didn't get the chance to inform him that she was pregnant with his baby before she died. Halley, Scarlett's best friend, sticks by her side through her hard times meanwhile dealing with her own boy problems. Scarlett has two hard decisions to make, to keep the baby and to tell Michael's mother. Scarlett has the baby and ends up keeping it. After it is born she decides to write to Michael's mother to tell her about their baby.

The audience for this book is mostly teenage girls because it's somewhat a love story and it also involves decisions some girls might face throughout high school.

Sarah Dessen’s writing style is third person throughout the whole book.

Passages that struck me:

1. “ Okay,” I said, wondering if she had visions of me being nailed by errant Wiffle balls or blinded by flying badminton birdies, or if it was only just Macon, and everything he reminded her of, that made her so sad. ‘ I will,’ I said.”
This passage struck me because it showed Halley really felt bad for Scarlett’s loss and she didn’t want to talk about her boy problems with Scarlett even though she was her best friend.

2. “ She reached behind the paper towel dispenser and pulled out a small white stick-shaped object with a little circle on the end of it. As she held it out, I saw that in the little circle was a bright pink cross. Then, all at once, it hit me.”
This passage struck me because everyone just found out about Scarlett’s pregnancy. She was so eager to tell Halley that she interrupted her at work.

3. “ I hoped that Grace would be a bit of the best of us: Scarlett’s spirit, and my mother’s strength, Marion’s determination, and Michael’s sly humor. I wasn’t sure what I could give, not just yet.”
I liked this passage because its describing what they think the baby will turn out like and I think the passage shows that the baby will be cared for by many people.

I interacted with this book in many ways. I really related to the girls going through boy stuff, I found it really interesting. I couldn’t imagine finding out I was pregnant and the father of the baby died I wouldn’t know what I would do and this book made me realize stuff like that really happens. I couldn’t really relate to the boy problems in this book but I thought it was a really good book and I really enjoyed reading it. I would definitely recommend this book to other teen-age girls; I think they would like it a lot.

  1. I think that this would be something I would enjoy reading. I like to read books about the problems girls face so if I needed to I could relate to them. I think the passages she chose were the right ones to pick. Even though I haven't read the book it seems like its about Scarlett's pregnancy. It was good she picked a passage about the pregnancy because thats the problem she was facing.

  2. I've heard a lot about this book, and how many teenage girls enjoyed reading it. I feel as if i'd enjoy reading it because you never know if you might end up in that position one day. Books with messages such as Someone Like You, seem like they would help teenage girls to think about there decisions much more then they do. Your summary makes me want to read it, and find out all the little details that go on throughout the rest of the book!

  4. I think that i would really enjoy reading this book because it deals with problems. I feel like it would be more enjoyable to girls because it seems like it talks about boy problems. I like how you could relate situations back to a book like this. I think she does a really good job in explaining the book and the passages she uses.

  5. I have not read this book, but I feel like this book sounds dumb. Why would a sixteen year old girl decide to keep a baby when it doesn’t have a father? This kind of reminds me of what is currently happening in Secret Life right now. Amy has TWO “fathers” for her child plus Ben’s dad and her parents, and she still doesn’t know if she can financially support a child. It’s amusing to me the Halley is supporting her friend while dealing with “her own boy problems.” Because I think that being pregnant at sixteen, and having boy problems are not related because they’re on totally different levels! –Pat Larrow

  7. Brielle Premont- This book sounds very intresting. That's crazy he died in the car accident. I can't believe she ended up keeping it and not telling the mother until after it was born. It sounds like her friend was always there for her which is good. I think i might want to read this book

  8. I've heard many good things about this book. The story sounds very unique and I really think I'd like it. The second passage is relateable because we all go through those moments when things just hit us and I think Dessen portrayed that very well. I also agree with Shy because after reading books like this it might be easier to make a decision if you ever get stuck in that kind of position.
