Jurassic park, Michael Crichton, Alfred A. Kroft, 416
I found the book from my uncle who told me the book was better than the movie
The novel starts on the coast of costa Rica where a European family is vacationing. A young girl in the family runs off by herself and gets attacked by multiple small creatures that resemble large lizards. Also many small infants are found attacked by similar small creatures. A paleontologist named alan grant and his young assistant are paid thousands of dollars for their research to come to a billionare’s island off the coast of costa rica to consult his company, ingen. When they get to the island they find out that ingen have cloned dinosaurs from dna found in blood in a fossilized mosquito. The gaps in the DNA were replaced by reptile and amphibian dna since they are decendants of dinosaurs. Professor grant finds a velocil raptor egg in the forest even though all of the cloned dinosaurs are all female, meaning that some how the dinosaurs are reproducing. During a tour of the park an employee deactivates the security systems of the park, allowing the dinosaurs to escape and kill employees on the island so that he can steal and sell numerous dinosaur embryos. This plan backfires and gets him killed along with others. The scientists on the island discover that the frog DNA that used allowed the dinosaurs to change sex, and then procreate. After control of the island is lost, everyone evacuates, and the island is bombed by the Costa Rican air force. At the end you find out that animals are killing livestock and eating crops in the area.
The writing style of this novel is first person and it switches from numerous characters in the story.
I really liked the book because it had lots of action and talked about many scientific topics such as cloning. The novel also dived into the moral side of cloning and the ability to play god. One theme in the book is that they no matter how hard you try that you cant control nature. They tried to prevent the dinosaurs from reproducing by making them female but that didn’t work because they adapted and overcame the issue.

I have read this book before and I thought it was really good. I think the book is much better than the movie because it has a lot more detail which allows you to get in to the story more. I too like the theory of cloning, and I think that is one of the reasons I really liked this book. I like how you said that one of the themes was that you can't control nature. This is definitly true in that nature should just be left alone to procede how it wants to. -Corey Whelihan
ReplyDeleteI really like your summary of this book.It seems like a good book but I feel like I wouldn't enjoy reading this book. This book is just not my type especially since it has to do with dinosaurs.I like the fact that the book is descriptive. Descriptive books are the kind of books that interest me but excluding science.

I like the way you talk about the book. But i don't think it would be a book that i would sit down and read. I never really liked the movie so i couldn't imagine the book being good. I think that you did a good job explaining everything though and if i was more into it i would maybe sit down and read it.
ReplyDeleteBrielle Premont- I really loved the movie. There was always so much action in it. The way you described the book made it seem like it would be intresting. I feel like the movie will always be better though. I also liked your quotes.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the summary of this book a lot and i thought it was well written. However, I do not think i would enjoy actually reading the book. I am not really interested in dinosaurs. I thought the quotes chosen were very good and expressed the story very well.

* So I accidentally wrote about quotes that you wrote in the summary but there aren't any quotes in it. I was thinking of the quotes from a previous summary. Sorry =(

I like your summary of the book. Personally I'm a big fan of the movie and so i can really relate to your blog. the quotes are good but i dont remember all of them from the film ;) Good Job
ReplyDeleteI have seen this movie and I personally think it is very good. I am sure the book is much better because it probably represents things with much greater description. I do not know if the book was written after the movie but if it was written before it is probably better. I agree with Andrew that the theme of the book is that no matter how hard you try, nature is uncontrolable.
ReplyDeleteThis seems like an interesting book to read. While I have never read the book, I have seen the movie. I enjoyed watching it so I would probably enjoy reading the book. It has a really good plot.
ReplyDeleteThis seems like an enticing book. Ive seen most of the movie and it seems like something I'd rather watch than read. The summary you wrote really makes this book sound interesting, and your "My Relationship" section was very powerful. I found it very impressive the way you were able to identify the theme.
ReplyDeleteThis book seems pretty interesting. I have seen the movie, and if it is anything like that, then it would seem very enjoyable. Your summary is great, and it really gives a good understand about the plot without giving the whole novel away. I would definitely read this book

i personally love the movie. Its combination of action and a sort of sci-fi is very well put together. I imagine that the book would be just as good as the movie. If it wasn't i would be very disappointed. andrew u are missing some quotes but your summary is well done
ReplyDeleteI thought the summary of the book was very interesting and well written. I don't think i would read the books, but i have seen the movies and I like them. I would not take the time to read itjust becasue I am not that interested in dinosaurs.
ReplyDeleteI love reading books about different places so this would be a good book for me to read. The wording for the summary was nice and it made me want to go buy a copy of the book. The movie kind of scared me so it would be difficult but very interesting. This was an interesting choice for a book. I didn't know it came in book form.

This book sounded very intereting. I have seen the movie and thought it was good. So saying that, I would probably enjoy reading this book as much I enjoyed watching the movie. Thank you andrew for sparking my initiative to read this book.

I've read this book as well two times before and I've also seen the movie. I thought this book was one of the best and most descriptive books that I have ever read. The thought of dinosaurs roming the world alongside humans is very interesting to me. It makes me think what it would actually be like to be living with them still alive on our planet. I think Andrew provides this blog a very accurate summary of the novel.

This story is one of my absolute favorites. I remember the first time I saw the movie I was about 3 years old and I immediately became obsessed with dinosaurs. I would go around telling people that when I grew up I wanted to be a paleontologist. I think you did a great summery of the book. I personally have never read the book but I own every movie and watch them frequently. I often get made fun of by my friends for referencing the movie for jokes. Maybe ill try reading it.

I think that this book helped launch a large hollywood movie prodution that grossed millions. It also got me very interested in dinosaurs. Although i have never read the book it looks like you made a very solid summary. I really like how it incorporates controversial scientific topics such as cloning. The idea that todays technology is capable of such feats is also scary.
