The book I read was Fallen Angles by Walter Dean Myers. It was published by Scholastic inc. and is 309 pages long. Ms. Monaco gave me the book in my study block.
This book takes place in 1968 Vietnam. It is about a solider named Perry who is fighting in the Vietnam War. Perry is an eighteen year old black man who lives in New York with his mom and little brother Kenny. When he is in Vietnam he makes friends with a guy named Peewee. Peewee is a carefree guy with a loud mouth. When he starts fighting in the war he makes friends and loses friends. He gets a small leg injury. And he writes letters to his mom telling her what is going on in the war.
The audience is probably boys and people who want to know about the Vietnam War. You can hear what he thinks in the book.
The authors writing style is normal. The scenes that have some sort of importance have good detail in it while unimportant scenes are short and are summed up easily. “For breakfast we had eggs, coffee, buns, bacon, and grits. Peewee complained that he missed the roast beef.” Page 61.
“I thought I would throw up. I stood along with the other guys in the squad until the bag had been zipped up.” Page 42. This is when Perry found out that one of the guys he had just met was killed. It shows one of the worst things that can happen to him there.
“Lobel gave her some candy and carried her around on his shoulders. I shook her hand, and she seemed to want to hold on to my fingers. Sergeant Simpson let a young boy wear his canteen.” Page 52. This quote shows even though they are at war they still have some peaceful moments.
“Suppose it’s poisoned or something? I asked. Then I’m going to die, Peewee said.” Page 53. This shows Peewee isn’t scared to die their.
I think the book was easy to read and understand. It got to the important sections without describing too much. It showed how the character felt with a short amount of words. And it showed how being in war felt.

This seems like one book that I might want to read. I have always been interested with reading or watching movies about past wars. It would also be interesting to read a story from one person's view, so I would be able to understand what is going through their head at certain times. With one of the passages I was happy to read that even though in a time of war, peace can be found. Then I was sad though to hear how Peewee would gladly die for a cause that may not even be worth it.
ReplyDeleteThis seems like a really realistic book like an autobiography of someone whos been in the war. i dont read too many books like this but it seems good. your quotes were good and your review was written well. i want to read it just to find out how peewee died. you did a good job leaving it for us to wonder and want to know how he died and what goes on during the book.
