Juiced (Dan Covington)

Juiced; Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits, and how Baseball got BIG, Jose Canseco, ReganBooks
My brother showed me this book when he was in high school.
Juiced starts off with an autobiography about his childhood through his early adult years. He talks about how his dad would push him and his brother very hard and too hard at some points. His mother was a very important part of his life and vowed to her that he would be the best athlete in the world and he tried his best to achieve that. Canseco talks a lot about his early career in the minor leagues all the way through his big league career. The way he was perceived in the media was not as one of the best people in America. He struggled to have a good image in the media whether it was because of baseball of because of his personal life. Canseco reveals his secrets about other MLB players using steroids and basically throws them under the bus doing it. He talks about who were some of the more obvious users and some of the guys who slipped under the radar of accusations. Most importantly, he talks about how he used steroids and what he thinks will come of them in the years to come whether it be for and advantage in sports or just to help live a longer healthier life.
Juiced is a book most people would enjoy reading if you like sports and or controversy.
Canseco’s writing style is immature, arrogant and funny.
“So yes, I have personally reshaped the game of baseball through my example and my teaching,” (9). This quote shows his arrogance and what makes the book funny.
“If I had two weaknesses in my life, they would have to be fast cars and women,” (83). This quote shows the kind of person Canseco is and why he might have had a bad image in the media.
“It was clear to me from watching him that Giambi got turned onto steroids while he was under Mark McGuire’s wing,” (169). This quote shows how he had no problem throwing people in the spotlight to show who was using the band substances.
In the book Juiced the parts I could relate to are how athletes could try and take any advantage to the game they could get. People make a huge controversy over professional athletes using steroids when they don’t realize that different substances are always being used even at the high school and college levels. The part that really spoke to me is where he put the vow he made to his mother over everything else.

Juiced looks like a great read for any sports lovers. I'll have to read this book because Jose Canseco is the man. The book sounds interesting, funny, and pretty factual. I am interested about reading this book because of all the news in the media about steroids in professional sports. Reading this could help my understanding of proformance enhancing drugs.
