LA Candy (Melissa Bak)

Title: L.A. Candy
Author: Lauren Conrad
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers
Pages: 324

I found the book at Borders Book Store. I knew that it was coming out because I read about it in Seventeen Magazine and I wanted to read it so bad once it came out.

L.A. Candy is about two best friends, Scarlett and Jane who move to L.A together. Scarlett is going to college at U.S.C and Jane is doing an internship. They are approached by a producer who wants to make them into stars and give them their own reality tv show. (A reality version of sex and the city.) They agree to do the show and they become famous quite fast. It starts to get to Scarlett and Jane fast, but then Jane starts to realize what’s going on. People start to want everything from her and start to use her. Some people in L.A. even start to want to become them and want their famous roles. Everything becomes so hectic in their new L.A. lives as they try to make it through college and internships and living in L.A as older teenagers, as nothing is what it seems to be.

The audience for this book is for The Hills and Lauren Conrad fans.

The authors writing style is very descriptive, and she makes you feel like you’re right there, or as if it is a movie. (Pg 15) The August sky was a bright, cloudless blue, and the air shimmered with heat.

“You’re not a total bitch” (Pg 7) This is the title of the chapter and it just surprised me and reminded me of Lauren’s show The Hills because it was the topic/title of one of the episodes and it was when she was in a fight with her friend Audrina.

“Scarlett: I’m sorry, I had to get out of here. Madison is sneaking me out and we’re going to her parents’ condo in for a few days. I need to get away from everyone and everything. Madison says there’s no cell reception at her place, which is probably a good thing. I love you! See you when I get back. Xoxo Jane. (Pg 324)

This ending of the book surprised me because it just reminded me so much of The Hills. The people in the show always talked about getting away from things in Hollywood and L.A. Lauren often went to Mexico with some friends, just like Jane ended up doing in the book. Basically the entire book stuck me because it related so much to The Hills. Everything about the book was just like Lauren’s real life. I felt like I was just reading her life and learning things and finding out thoughts from a different perspective. There were a few twists on things but for the most part it made me think of Lauren, Audrina, LO, Heidi and a few others from the mtv show The Hills. I couldn’t really relate to the book too much because it was based in Hollywood/L.A. with that level of drama. In South Hadley there isn’t quite the same level of drama as in L.A. I could just see Lauren Conrad’s life all in the book. I couldn’t really interact with it besides at some points feeling like I’ve already seen this considering it was really similar to The Hills.

  2. It seems like you waited for this book and you thought it was worth waiting for. what the book is about seems like what some teenage girls dream of doing. The way the book related to you seemed like it made it an easier book for you melissa. the description of the story made me interested in the topic of what the book is about.

  3. I am very interested in reading this book. I'd like to see how Lauren Conrad writes, and to see how she perseves things instead of it just being showed on the MTV show "The Hills". It seems to me like you really enjoyed L.A. Candy. I'm definitely going to read it soon.

  4. I am a very big fan of Lauren Conrad because i have seen her shows "The Hills", and "Laguna Beach". From Melissa's description i can definitly see Lauren's life in parts of the book. Lauren moved to the Holywood Hills with her best friend Heidi Montag similar to Scarlett and Jane in the book. If the book is anything like Lauren's life in "The Hills" it must be full of drama. After reading this review, i would love to read this book for my next Outside Reading book because it sounds like a very good book full of suprises.

  5. The book seems to to live up to what you thought it would be and you seem to like this type of genre. The book seems like it has a very good plot and although not a book for me, you made an enticing lead for anyone who likes "The Hills" or shows like that to read this book.

  6. This sounds like something I wouldn't read to be honest with you. It's just not my type of book, but it is a good review. The details in one of the quotes is good, because it can give the reader a good understanding of what is going on. If you're into reality TV, or drama type suff you should read this, you'd probably get quite into it.

  8. I think this book sounds interesting to read, but predictable at the same time. I feel like it would be exactly like The Hills. Although, I do love the show, so I wouldn't mind reading the book.

  9. This book sounds just like the show, but with different names. I am not a fan of the show because it seems fake to me. I feel like the book would be the same way. You really seem to know a lot about the show in giving a very good description and comparison. I think it is interesting how Lauren Conrad wrote this as somewhat an autobiography, but with different names. Great job on writing this review.

The review of the book was very well writen. It's personally not my type of reading but I feel that girls that love the show "The Hills" would love this book. I really like how you described your last qoute because to many people it's true. Now a days we tend to run away from our problems and not face them. It sounds like a very enjoyable book to read and I might consider reading it.

Melissa everyone knows you're Lauren Conrads #1 fan :) It sounds like you really enjoyed the book because I remember you saying you couldn't wait to buy the book. This book sounds like a perfect book for a teenage girl to read because who wouldn't want to be on a relaity TV show? Also, If you've watched Laguna Beach, The Hills, and The City, like me, you would really like the book becuase its like a TV show in a book! This book sounds amazing and I will make sure to check it out!

  12. After reading your book review, this makes me want to read L.A Candy, but at the same time I'm wondering if it's just like another reality show. Often times I like to read books that can relate to lifes of people I know. This book seems like it could be realistic and interesting, but I wouldn't want it to be just another MTV TV show.
