Stained (Alex Dumais)

1. Stained Jennifer Richard Jacobson An imprint of Simon and Schuster children’s publishing division 200 pages

2. South Hadley High School library

3. Stained is mostly about one character, Jocelyn, and her boy problems. She loses her boyfriend Benny because his priest tells him to. Meanwhile her neighbor Gabe has gone missing form a party. The book switches from past to present, from when she was a kid and hung out with Gabe to her boyfriend problems. Then she hooks up with Benny and the priest finds out. The priest then tells Benny to stay away from her. The mystery of Gabe’s disappearance isn’t so exciting he was hiding in the woods and didn’t want to go home.

4. I feel that the book is writhen for mostly girls because it kind of has a little drama but it could be for boys because it has a little mystery to it.

5. Jennifer Richard Jacobson talks in a first person type of tone. It has some slang like teenagers are talking for example “Bernadette takes a missing pack out of her peacoat pocket. Want a cig?” (102).

6. 1)“ ’Gabe didn’t come home last night’ , my mother said” this shocks me because I would be terrified if I had a kid and he didn’t come home or call me. 2) “The end of Gabe’s hand touches mine we look up at the downy sky and dry in the sun.” this shocked me because it seams like they had a thing and I never thought they would be like that. 3) “’Oh,’ he says. ‘Has he been trying to get in my pants?’ I nod. ‘It’s occurred to me, yes.’ “I found this shocking that he would still go to the same priest even though he knows he is trying “to get in his pants.”

7. I feel that I couldn’t relate this book because it was a girl book. I also feel like I had a hard time getting into the book so it wasn’t an enjoyable read for me. This is because it’s mostly about a girl and here problems with her boyfriend and excreta. It might be a good book for some girls to read so I would suggest it there but for guys I wouldn’t.

  1. I think that you're right about relating to the book. This seems like a great book for girls but not so much as boys. The one thing that shocked me most was when Benny broke up with Jocelyn because his priest told him to. I think that if you truly love someone, nobody can tell you who you can't be with. Stained doesn't seem like a book that I would read but I would give it a try.

  3. Since this book has drama in it I could never read it. South Hadley has way to much drama and I really don't feel the need to read about more drama. Also, since this book seems to be more on the girly side I wouldn't waste my time.
