Title: Night World Book 3 Includes: Huntress, Black Dawn, and Witchlight
Author: L.J. Smith
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Pages: 732
Found the Book: I saw it at a Walmart.
Summary:
In each Night World book there are three different stories. The Night World is a society of witches, vampires, and werewolves that try to stay hidden from the human world. They only have two rules; never tell humans about the Night World, and to never fall in love with a human. Each of these stories are about creatures of the Night World breaking these rules. There are also those in the Night World that think they are better then humans, and that humans have had enough time in power. The group Circle Daybreak includes creatures and humans alike that join together to stop those acts of evil from happening. Each group tries to search for the four people that hold the Wild powers, because whichever side can harness those powers, wins.
Audience:
The audience for this book would probably be for teens, because the characters in the book are mostly teenagers and the book in a way talks about young love.
Writing Style:
L.J. Smith's writing style is something I like very much. She can give enough description to give you an image, but doesn't go over the top. Her books are also worded so that young or old could understand them.
“The skinhead gang leader in front of her didn't move. He had a pasty face and shark eyes. He was standing tensely, trying to look tough, but Jez could see the little quiver in his leg muscles (5).”
3 Passages:
“Do you know what they'll do to you? Especially when they find out you're a fake? She saw his faint answering smile. He knew. What difference does it make? He said in her mind. You and me – we're lost anyway. And without you. I don't care what happens (220 Smith).”
This one passage showed me that people would do anything for love. If you find that special someone, you are willing to even die for them if it meant it would keep them safe. What Morgead did for Jez was tell her that he would rather die then be without her, and I thought that was really romantic.
“'Trusting people,' he said, as if it should have been obvious. 'Taking care of people. Don't you know that only the strong ones make it? Weak people are dead weight – and if you try to help them, they'll drag you down with them (318).'”
I found this passage to be cruel and I was a little appalled. When I thought about it though, this was how some people actually thought about life. Some people think that if you can't further there goals then you are nothing. They only think of themselves, and what is best for them. I think that is stupid, because if we all helped each other out instead of fighting, we would live in a better world.
“Grandma Harman said, 'If you won't accept your responsibilities as a Wild Power, will you at least do your duty as the Witch Child? The winter solstice is next Saturday. On that night, there's going to be a meeting of the shapeshifters and the witches. If we can show them a promise ceremony between you and the son of the First House of the shapeshifters, the shapeshifters will join us (543).'”
This passage made me think of how lucky I am. I am glad that I am not obligated to marry someone, just because it might help someone else. I get to go on dates with guys I like, instead of a guy I am forced to like. It got me thinking that, there are some good reasons not to be royalty.
Interaction:
One thing in this book that really spoke to me was the devotion some of these characters had. All the characters proved time and time again that they would do anything for the ones they loved. Whether it was there parents, siblings, or lovers there actions were kind yet also protective. It just reminded me that not everyone is bad in todays world.

This book sounds really good and I think I would read it. I love to read books that give me a detailed image in my mind without over the top like you have described. The last passage that you wrote about not being royalty really spoke out to me. I wouldn't want to be forced to like someone else either. We are very lucky to have that kind of freedom.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds like something that I would read. The summary sounds very interesting, and even reminds me of one of my favorite books, "Twilight". I liked most of the passages, and they interested me. I love the passage about weak people dragging you down with them. In some cases it may be true, just not physically true. I love reading about vampires, witches, and other similar creatures, so I think I would enjoy a book like this one.
ReplyDeleteNight World seems like a very unique book. I like how you said it was three stories in one. That seems like the plot would never get too boring because the situations would constantly be changing. I agree with you and Kim, on how it would be awful to be forced to be with someone that you don't get to choose to be with. The freedom of choice is one of the most prized values held in society today, and I don't think anyone would be comfortable in a situation like you mentioned! I would definitely consider reading this book because it sounds like a totally different genre that I've never read before! Good choice!

Night World seems really good. I like books like this, I'm a huge fan of the twilight series and this books has some similar characteristics such as vampires and werewolves. After reading the passages from the book it seems that the author has an interesting writing style that I would enjoy. I also like the fact that it was written for teenagers. That way maybe I would relate with it more and in turn help me enjoy it more.

ReplyDeleteThis book seems very interesting. It's not a book that i would usually read, because i like too read about reality book and things that may happen in life or actually do happen in life. I could open my range of reading to maybe reading this book. Three stories in one might be a little confusing for me but maybe ill check it out.
Anna, Night world sounds like an amazing book. I haven't really read many books that have to do with witches, vampires, and werewolves. I might have to check this book out sometime because it’s not something I normally would read. Nice book choice!

ReplyDeleteThis book sounds really interesting and like something I would love to read. It's really cool how it has three different stories in one book. I'm a huge fan of the Twilight Series, so I might love this book because of the similarities between them. I will definitely put this on my books to read list.
