The Time Travelers Wife,
published by MacAdam/Cage,
536 pages
I found the book at the bookstore because I knew the movie was out and I wanted to read the book first.
In the book The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, The two protagonists of the story are Clare Abshire and Henry DeTamble. In the story Care is a small child when she is visited by an older man in the meadow behind her house. This man tells her that in the future they are together and that he travels through time. When Clare and Henry finally meet in the present time they immediately fall in love. The only problem in the relationship is that Henry time travels at any moment. The book describes the troubles they encounter due to the time traveling. It’s hard for them being in a relationship when Henry is constantly coming and going, but it shows how love is timeless.
The audience for this book would have to be directed towards young adults because there is a lot of sexual content in it.
Audrey Niffenegger writing style is very unique. Each chapter switches around to different times in Clare’s and Henry’s lives and in the chapters there is a point of view from each character. The author also uses a lot of foreshadowing, keeping you interested in finding out what will actually happen next. “Clare has been in a strange mood all week. She’s distracted.” (378)
“It’s dark now and I am very tired. I love you, always. Time is nothing.” (521) Henry says this to Clare in a letter to her after he dies. This stands out because the whole story is about there struggle with time. It shows how love can outlast time.
“I go to sleep alone, and wake up alone. I take walks. I work until I’m tired. I watch the wind play with the trash that’s been under the snow all winter. Everything seems simple until you think about it. Why is love intensified by absence?Long ago, men went to sea, and women waited for them, standing on the edge of the water, scanning the horizon for the tiny ship. Now I wait for Henry. He vanishes unwillingly, without warning. I wait for him. Each moment that I wait feels like a year, an eternity. Each moment is as slow and transparent as glass.” (155) Being away from someone makes you almost love them more because you’re not reminded of their flaws, but you only remember why you love them. Loneliness is sad and really makes you think about the people you love.
“I feel like we are on a roller coaster,’ but then I am asleep and I forget to ask her, in the morning, what she means.” (456) This is said in the book and they never actually tell you what it means. I think it would be interesting to have known what Clare actually meant when she said this. I really liked this book and its interpretation of love. It showed the special bond between people even when they have a big obstacle to overcome. The book really spoke to me how Clare was willing to deal with limited time with Henry because she loved him. The message the book was really positive in showing that there is someone out there for everyone and you must have patience.

This book sounds really good. I was hoping to read it before I saw the movie too. It does sound a little confusing because they switch time periods a lot, but I bet as you read it that it’s pretty clear. I like that you said, “Being away from someone makes you almost love them more because you’re not reminded of their flaws, but you only remember why you love them. Loneliness is sad and really makes you think about the people you love,” because it’s entirely true and I agree with you. That part really stands out and I can see why you chose that quote. I probably would have done the same. This novel is going on my list of books to read, and I need to read it so I can hurry up and watch the movie.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds very interesting. I saw that the movie was out, but i sort of want to read the book beforehand. I feel that it would at times be a little perplexing, but that would make the book that much better to read. Your description of the book was very helping to me while i am trying to find my next outside reading book. Does the couple ever end up together for good? This is a question i can't wait to figure out.
ReplyDeleteThe description of the book makes it easy to understand, even when the book seems really confusing and the period of time switches a lot. The book seems very emotional and alomst a tragedy due to Clare always being left behind. The book seems really fascinating and always keeps you guessing.
ReplyDeleteI want to see this movie so bad! It looks so cute. I'm glad you had good reviews on the book because I think I'll want to read it before I see the movie. It sounds intreging, and I'm excited to read this novel sooner or later.
ReplyDeleteI saw this movie, and it was very confusing but really good. This review made me also want to read the book because it seems like there is more to the story than the movie shows. From Melissa's review it seems that there are a lot of unanswered questions in this book, which was similar to the movie. I'm sure that the book would be less confusing than the movie was, because it probably has a lot more detail about where Henry travells to and where Clare is when he is travelling.

ReplyDeleteI would love too see this movie or read the book seems really interesting. I also noticed the the character clare thinks deeply about things whit the quotes you have provided. Also seems like while reading the book it would get confusing since hes leaving all the time, but maybe not i would have to read the book and find out myself!
This book seems like a very emotional book and shows the stresses of love. Also the obstacles you go through in having a relationship. Henry and clare must be very strong to still be there for one another throughout all of this. The review also seems to simplify a plot that could be very confusing
ReplyDeleteYour summary was really well written and even though the quotes seemed a little bit confusing it still seems like an amazing book. I saw the movie when it came out in the theaters and it was fantastic. It was a little disappointing because my expectations were very high but overall it was great. I would definitely enjoy reading this book.
ReplyDeleteYour review was really well written. This book sounds really gooood, i absolutley loved the movie! I did find the movie very confusing so i bet the book was just as confusing. I really enjoyed the movie but i dont think id be one to read the book, im more of a movie person rather than reading it.
ReplyDeleteI feel that i'd rather read the book then go and see the movie but i'd also like to compare. Looking at the brief summary it seems very interesting and deep. I feel that their would be a lot of parts that could really speak to a reader and tough the heart. Love is a veey strong thing and reading a book were it comes and goes, well that's just hard to handle.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as you read this book, you told me how great it was. I am definitely going to check it out soon. I'm glad that I didn't watch the movie yet because I feel like the books are always better. From the passages you selected, some parts seem like they could be a little bit confusing, but your summary has me intrigued. Love is something that everyone interprets differently, so I'm excited to see what happens.

ReplyDeleteI really wish I read this book before the movie because then it would have made a lot more sense. The movie was good, but not excellent becuase they kept going to the past, present, and furture which was really confusing. The book sounds like it's more straight forward and easier to understand. The passages you chose, in my opinion, were very good because it tells you a lot about the novel. I plan on reading this book sooner or later when I have more time in my life.
I was forced to see this movie with my girlfriend when it came out and it actaully wasnt a bad movie. As far as books go this is a book I could be potentially interested in reading. The events that happen is this book are rather random and always keeps the reader guessing.
