Title: The Lovely Bones
Author: Alice Seabold
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company
Pages: 328
I decided to read this book because a lot of my friends read it and told me it was really good, so I figured I would give it a shot.
Susie Salmon, a 14 year old girl, who gets rapes and murdered by her neighbor George Harvey. Susie tells the story from heaven for 8 years after her death. She watched her family go through the pain of losing her and watches her family being destroyed. Susie gets frustrated watching her father as he suspects the neighbor of the murder but cannot prove it. Her mother leaves her family and wishes she had a different life, her sister struggles at school and Susie’s brother talks to her all the time. As Susie watches over her family, one day her father becomes ill, which brings her mother back. She feels better that her family is all together again. Not till then does Susie feel as though she can move on. Although her murder was never solved, her family and friends always suspected her neighbor, George Harvey, but he is now nowhere to be found.
The audience of this book would be young adults because of the violent rape and murder of a young girl. The writing style is somewhat personal from the author’s own experience. The author was raped when she was in college so she could relate and explain how it feels.
“Susie! Susie!” I heard my mother calling. “Dinner is read.” He was inside me. He was grunting. “We’re having string beans and lamb.” I was the mortar, he was the pestle. “Your brother has the new finger painting, and I made apple crumb cake.” This struck me because I can’t even imagine being raped as I can hear my mother calling me for dinner, not knowing that it would be the last time I would ever hear her voice.
Already my private territory had become a no man’s land, in the middle of our house. My mother had no touched it. My bed was still un made from the hurried morning of my death. My flowered hippo lay among the sheets and pillows, and so did an outfit I’d discarded before I chose the yellow bell bottoms. This struck me because it’s really sad to think that no one in her family could go into her room after her death. It’s sad not knowing that was the last morning she was ever going to get up again.
“Susie is dead,” he said now, unable to make it fit in the rules of any game. “Do you know what that means?” Buckley reached over his hand and covered the shoe, he looked up to see if his answer was right. “You won’t see Susie anymore, honey. None of us will.” My father cried. Buckley looked up into the eyes of our father and did not fully understand. This strikes me because Buckley is Susie’s little brother, and he is only four. He doesn’t understand why he won’t see Susie anymore, and when he grows up, he will probably never remember her.
I believe the primary theme of this book is how a family copes with the murder of their child.
The family starts to fall apart, and the mother leaves home because she cannot handle it, and ends up having an affair with someone else.
At the end of the book, after 8 years of struggles, the family comes together again.
I would rate this book an A just because the author used personal experience, so I feel as though I could really feel what she was going through. Her feelings made it very sad with a lot of strong emotions. It also made me feel as though Susie was okay in heaven, and that she had accepted the fact of what had happened. I felt as though Susie was just hoping the best for her family and that they could make it through knowing in some way that she was okay.

I read this book also. I loved it, it was very intense and always kept you wondering what was going to come next. I think the book really showed how it was like for a family to deal with a murder. It opened my eyes to situations. I definatly would recommend this book for others to read.
ReplyDeletegrace I read this book too and absoultely loved it! I thought it is very sad and the end of the book made me cry. I didn't think it was relatable to me because I've never experienced a murder thankfully. I would rate this book an A also because it was so detailed and really got me into the book. Your first quote creeped me out and I feel so bad for Suzie and her family
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to read this book, but I never got around to it. Based on your response, The book sounds very suspenseful and depressing. You used very strong quotes and even though I didn't read it I can still picture what is happening in the book. I really want to read the book and hopefully then see the movie!
ReplyDeleteI liked this book a lot but was upset about the ending. It makes me made that the murderer never got caught. Susie's father was right and no one believed him. I feel this book is more relatable to those who are dealing with someone's murder or a loss in general. I'm glad I read this book.

I read this book a while ago and it is one of my favorites. I love the suspense that the author creates throughout the entire book. I agree with your rating, this book definitely deserves an A. I was suprised when I found out that the author wrote this book based on personal experience, I did not expect that.
ReplyDeleteI read this book for summer reading and I loved it. The first passage also struck me, the same way it struck Grace. I would never even want to imagine getting raped, never mind hearing your mother's voice while it is happening and knowing that you will never see your family again. This book was both scary and sad. The way the family had to cope with the terrible loss of a daughter and a sister is something that no one should have to go through. I definitely agree that this book should get an A, because when I read it, I could feel what the family was feeling, which doesn't normally happen when reading a book.

I read this book over the summer and it was, like, totally FABULOUS! To me, the theme of this book was unclear, although I really enjoyed the story. It was a VERY different concept for a book and it pulled it off very well. I'm sure all of you are aware, but a film is being made from the book. This is great, but something is different: in the movie, Susie's death isn't going to be shown/directlty mentioned or reflected upon, just kind of gently hinted at for the viewer to assume. This is only because the dude who is making the film wants his 13 year old daughter to be able to watch it.
ReplyDeleteThis was a GREAT book. Personally,I loved it! The way that the author describes to you how her mother, father, and sister are feeling is so good. She even got me to feel bad for her killer at this one point. The mood was always changing but the theme stayed the same all along. I love this book!
ReplyDeleteI read this book for summer reading last summer. I hated it because nothing really exciting ever happened. The first chapter Susie dies, then it is all about her watching her family from heaven. I espeically didn't like how she took over friend's body at one point to be with this boy that she had a crush on when she was alive. It was very unbelieveable and boring book to read.

I read this book over the summer. I really liked how the author (as Grace said) puts personal experience into the book. In my opinion, books with personal experience always get better ratings, like Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. I saw that a movie for The Lovely Bones, that's another book to movie film I want to see.
ReplyDeleteI don’t usually like reading but this book, I just couldn’t put down. I do agree with Nicole, it was a little boring at parts…also strange and weird like when talking about Susie’s heaven but interesting at the same time. I liked how this book was different than any other and taken from a perspective usually not seen from. In books when the person is killed they are no longer in the picture and are taken out of text; in this though, the deceased was the narrator. I cannot wait until I am able to see the film in theaters.

ReplyDeleteI have also read this book and thought it was great at some points, but boring in others. This book was unlike anything I've ever read before, so it was interesting to read. I liked how it took a different perspective. The characters were very unique and I enjoyed learning about them and their story. Overall, this book was quite good.
I read this book over the summer, and I found it very interesting. I loved the plot, and all of the characters. I thought that how the heaven was described was different because I never thought of each person having a heaven specifically designed for them. It was an unique idea that the author had to be creative for. I like how some of her own life was in the book.
ReplyDeleteI read this book for summer reading, and it became one of my favorite books. It really struck me because of the fact the author did take from personal experience. This book was intriguing and I couldn't put it down. I especially liked how Alice Seabold had Susie in Heaven watching her family cope. This book was very intense and I reccomend it to anyone.
ReplyDeleteGrace, you described this book with a lot of passion and heart. the book seems very sad, or at least the end. i however do not enjoy sad endings and would rather not read this story. The book seems well described and grace you really drew me in with the summary.

Having read this book it is a very good yet complex book, and sometimes confusing book to follow. The narrator is telling the story from heaven and at times you are left to wonder if she is speaking in heaven or in real life. The book is very sad at points and depressing. The summary by grace is very good and if i didnt know about the book i would like to read it. ~Andy Ladas
ReplyDeleteThe only reason I found this book somewhat interesting during the summer was the thought of being in her position. You never know if something bad will ever happen to you. You can't take everyday for granted. I also found the author's depiction of heaven quite interesting too. All you had to do was want something and concentrate and then, you would have for eternity. - Chris Miele
ReplyDeleteI have also read this book last year. I thought the author's writing style differed from any other book that I had ever read before. I also have to admit that you did pick probably one of the more gruesome quotes from the book, but it does show the true nature of this novel. I thought that how the main character, Susie Salmon, started out in heaven looking down upon her family was a very unique point of view. I think this is what made the book stand out the most from any ordinary novel.
ReplyDeleteUnlike most people, i have not read this book. After reading about the book it really makes me want to read it. It seems like one of those books that keeps your attention and makes you want to keep reading. That's why this book seems like one that i would read, because i need to want to keep reading, other wiase i will get distracted and not be able to finish it.

This is a great book. I read it over the summer as one of the books we were assigned to read and I loved it. This book, in my opinion, and as others have posted above, is told in an unique style. This book is very sad, and at times suspenseful--the reader always wondering if Susie's murder will be solved--which is why it's so great. I would say that this book is probably one of the best books I've read for a school assignment.
ReplyDeleteI read this book too grace and absolutly loved it, i couldnt put it down. Although it was pretty sick at times i think that the god parts over weighed them. It kept my attention really well and i kept wanting to know what could possibly happen next. I got really into this book at times and couldnt help but wanna just be about to tell them that they were right, it was the neighbor! Your paper was really well written and it was very strong. It has alot of good examples of passages to show what the book is like.

I have never read this book but it seems good. This summary was very well written and I enjoyed it. I may in fact have to go to the store and buy this book because it seems like a very touching story. The quotes used in this summary were great examples of how the novel was written.

This book was amazing and I fell in love with it when I read it the first time. I've read it many times and everytime I seem to like it even more. It pulls you in with every sentence and keeps you wanting more. This book is for all teenagers and is very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI actually had read this book during thisterm also. Considering that the book is still fresh in my mind it seems that we both have a very good understanding of the book. When i first read it, and reading your book report it sounds like it would be a book more related to the female category, I found the book to be very good from a man's perspective. To everyone that says they liked the book i agree with them because it was a fun read.

I read this book over the summer, and i loved it. It is one of my favorite books ever, because it's so different than any other book i have read. The plot is very intense and nail biting, and i love how the story is told from heaven, and on earth. I am also very excited to see the movie, and see how it compares to the book.

I've heard a lot of different oppinions on this book. Grace you did a good job summarizing and it seems like you enjoyed the book. I don't think I'm ever goin to read the book but I heard the movies coming out I might just settle with that.
ReplyDeleteI read this book this past summer and I did not like it at all. I think that I enjoy love stories more than murder-mysteries, so this book took me a really long time to get through. Despite that, I think that your book review was very accurate and I agree with it completely. I like the quotes that you picked because I think it was a good variety.
ReplyDeleteI also read this book over the summer. I would also give it an A. I can't relate to the plot because ive never been part of a murder case. However, I lile how the father never gives up and trys to solve the case. The ending was very sad and this is one of few books that made me emotionals.

I read this book over the summer and thought that it was ok. Some parts were extremely sad and others were highly suspenseful. I enjoyed most of the book, but I was very unhappy with the ending, and was very upset that her murderer was never caught. But over all this book was very unique and well written.
ReplyDeleteI started reading this book for summer reading and for some reason I just couldn't get into it. Maybe because it was summer and I did not want to sit home and read, but I wish i finished it. I still have it and think i'm going to read it before I see the movie even though the movie comes out january 15th and i'm very excited about that :) (ps. you should go see it with me.) Anyways you did good on this and now I want to finish reading it!
